Wishlist, search and account icons

Add a search icon, an account icon and a wishlist to your store's header. What each one does, where the wishlist is saved, and how it looks on a phone.

What the header icons are

Your store's header, the strip at the top with your logo and menu, normally ends with a cart icon. You can add up to three more icons beside it: Search, Account and Wishlist. All three are off by default, and with all three off your header looks exactly as it always has. They work on every template and on every plan.

Switch the icons on

  1. 1Open your store dashboard and go to Settings.
  2. 2Open Navigation & menu, or type “menu” into the Search settings… box at the top.
  3. 3Scroll past the Header menu card to the Header icons card.
  4. 4Switch on Search, Account or Wishlist. Each is separate, so turn on only the ones you want.
  5. 5Press Save in the bar at the bottom, then open your live store to check.

On the storefront the icons always sit in the same order: search, account, wishlist, then the cart.

The search icon lets a shopper search your products from any page, not only from the products page. Tapping it opens a box that says “Search products…”. On a computer the box opens inside the header. On a phone it drops down as a full-width bar under the header, with a Cancel button. Pressing Enter takes the shopper to your products page showing the products whose name or description contains what they typed. Turn it on once your catalogue is too big to scroll.

Account

What the account icon opens depends on one other setting. If you have switched on customer accounts, under Settings → Checkout → Customer accounts, the icon opens the shopper's account, where they log in and see their orders and saved details. If customer accounts are off, the same icon takes shoppers to your Track order page. The note under the toggle in Settings tells you which of the two you currently have. See Customer accounts for what an account gives a shopper.

Wishlist

Switching on Wishlist does three things at once.

  • Heart buttons appear on your products, on the product cards in your grids and on each product's own page. A shopper taps the heart to save the product and taps it again to remove it.
  • A heart icon appears in the header, with a small number showing how many products that shopper has saved.
  • A wishlist page is added at yourstore.com/wishlist. It is headed “Wishlist” and lists the saved products in the order they were saved. Tapping one opens its product page. With nothing saved it reads “Your wishlist is empty” and offers a Browse products button.

A wishlist is worth having when people visit several times before they buy, which is usual for jewellery, clothing, furniture and gifts. It gives an undecided shopper something to do other than leave.

Where the wishlist is saved

On the shopper's device, not in an account

The wishlist is kept in the shopper's own browser, on the phone or computer they used. They do not need to log in or create an account, and it works whether or not you have customer accounts switched on.

That keeps it quick and private, and it has consequences worth knowing before a customer asks.

  • It does not follow the shopper between devices. Hearts tapped on their phone are not there on their laptop.
  • It is lost if they clear their browser data, and a private or incognito window starts empty.
  • It is not tied to a customer account, even when they are logged in.
  • You cannot see it. Nothing is sent to us or to you, so there is no report of who saved what and no way to email people about their saved items.
  • It is kept separately for each store and holds up to 200 products.
  • A product you delete or archive stops showing on the wishlist page by itself.

How it looks on a phone

A phone header has room for very little, so only the search icon stays in it, next to the cart and the menu button. The account and wishlist entries move into the slide-out menu. At the bottom of that menu shoppers see My account, or Track order when customer accounts are off, and Wishlist with the number saved, such as “Wishlist (3)”. The heart buttons on the products themselves are the same on every screen.

Turning the wishlist off again

Switch Wishlist off and save. The hearts and the header icon disappear. The wishlist page itself still works for anyone who opens it, and still shows what they had saved, so nobody's list looks as though it was wiped. Switch it back on later and their saved products are still there, as long as they are on the same device.

Can I see which products people have wishlisted?

No. The wishlist lives only in each shopper's browser and is never sent to SitesPlaced, so there is nothing to report. To see which products get attention, use the Analytics tab.

A customer says their wishlist disappeared.

They are most likely on a different device or browser, in a private window, or they cleared their browser data. The wishlist is saved on the device it was made on, not in an account.

Do shoppers need an account to use the wishlist?

No. It works for everyone straight away, and it works the same whether customer accounts are on or off.

The account icon opens Track order, not a login page. Why?

Customer accounts are switched off. Tick Enable customer accounts under Settings → Checkout and save, and the same icon opens the shopper's account.

I switched the icons on but cannot see account or wishlist on my phone.

On a phone those two live inside the slide-out menu, at the bottom, so the header stays uncluttered. Only the search icon shows in the phone header.
