Control how your products page looks and sorts

Choose what shoppers see first, what the sort menu offers, whether category buttons or a filter sidebar show, and how product photos and cards behave.

What you can control

Your products page, and every category page, is the grid shoppers scroll to find something to buy. This guide covers the settings that decide how that grid is ordered and what surrounds it: the order shoppers see first, the sort menu, the category buttons, the filter sidebar, and three settings for the product cards themselves. None of them needs a paid plan.

Where the settings are

  • Settings → Pages & policies → Products page display holds Show first, Products page filters and Category buttons on the products page. You can also type “show first” or “category buttons” into the Search settings… box.
  • Settings → Sales boosters holds the three card settings: Product image hover, Category label on product cards and Product photo shape. They sit in that section, but they are free on every plan.
  • Everything is a draft until you press Save in the bar at the bottom.

What shoppers see first

Under Show first, pick the order your products appear in before a shopper chooses anything. Most shoppers never open the sort menu, so this choice is the order most people will ever see. It applies to your products page and to every category page.

  • Best sellers (default) puts the products that sold the most units at the top. It is counted from your 300 most recent orders, leaving out cancelled ones, and is refreshed about every ten minutes. A store with no orders yet shows its products in name order.
  • Newest uploads puts the products you added most recently at the top. Pick this if you add new stock often and want regular customers to see it without hunting.
  • Lowest price shows the cheapest first.
  • Highest price shows the most expensive first.

For a product with options at different prices, the price used for sorting is the lowest one, which is the same price the card shows.

The sort menu shoppers get

Next to the search box on the products page is a dropdown with Popular, New arrivals, Best offers, Price: Low to High and Price: High to Low. Your Show first choice is the one selected when the page opens. The shopper can change it, and their choice applies on top of any search, category or filter they have used.

  • Best offers is different from the others: it does not reorder the grid, it keeps only the products that show a struck-through higher price. It is left out of the menu when nothing in your store is discounted. It is also not offered under Show first, because as a starting view it would hide most of your catalogue.
  • The menu is hidden on a store with fewer than two products.
  • You can link straight to a sorted view. Add ?sort=new to the products page address, for example yourstore.com/products?sort=new, for a “New arrivals” link in your menu or bio. The other words are popular, offers, price-low and price-high. In Settings → Navigation & menu, choose Custom link… and type products?sort=new.

Category buttons

The row of category buttons above your products can show every category, none, or only the categories of one browse page. It matters once you have dozens of categories. The setting and the reasoning are in Browse pages.

Sidebar filters

Products page filters has two choices. Inline chips (default) is the row of category buttons. Left sidebar replaces that row with a filter panel down the left side, holding categories, a price range slider, and any product details you have marked as filters. On a phone the panel folds away behind a Filters button, which shows a count of the filters in use.

To filter by something like material or size, go to Settings → Catalog & fields, open Extra product details, and tick Storefront filter on that field. These filters only appear once the sidebar is switched on. With the sidebar on, the Category buttons on the products page choice disappears from settings, because the sidebar has taken the buttons' place. See Catalog & fields for the fields themselves.

Second photo on hover

Under Settings → Sales boosters → Product image hover, tick Swap to the second image on hover. When a shopper moves their mouse over a product card, the card fades to that product's second photo, which is a good way to show the back of a garment or the product in use. It works on every template. A product with only one photo is unaffected. Hovering needs a mouse, so this is something shoppers on a computer see; on a phone the card simply shows the first photo. New stores start with it switched on.

Square or portrait photos

Product photo shape sets the frame your product photos are shown in, on product cards and on the product page. Portrait (3:4) is the default and suits fashion. Square (1:1) suits photos shot square, such as those brought over from Instagram, which a portrait frame would cut off at the sides.

This setting works on the Minna template only

The dashboard card says so too: “Currently applies to the Minna theme.” On any other template you can change the dropdown and save it, but your storefront will look the same. If your photos are being cropped on another template, the dependable fix is to upload photos in the shape that template's cards use.

Category label on cards

Category label on product cards has one checkbox, Hide the category under product names. It removes the small category line from product cards in your home page product sections and on the products page. Turn it on when your categories are selling groups such as “Bestsellers” or “Under ₹2000”, which look odd printed under a product name. At the moment only the Maison template reads this setting. On other templates the checkbox saves but changes nothing.

The same Products page display card also holds the Header layout (Default, Banner or Minimal), the Products title and Products subtitle, the stock badge and the product details tables. Those are covered in Policies & products page.

I add new products every week. How do I put them at the top for everyone?

Go to Settings → Pages & policies → Products page display and set Show first to Newest uploads. Every shopper then sees your latest products first on the products page and on each category page, without touching the sort menu.

Best sellers is selected but my products are in alphabetical order. Why?

There is no sales history to rank by yet. Best sellers is counted from real orders, so a store with no orders shows products in name order. Products that have sold move to the top once orders come in, within about ten minutes.

I changed Product photo shape and nothing happened.

That setting is read by the Minna template only. The Settings card says so under the dropdown. On other templates it has no effect.

Can I choose the exact order of products by hand?

Not on the products page. The order comes from Show first and the shopper's sort choice. On your home page you can hand-pick products and their order in a Featured Products section from the Design tab.

Where did the Category buttons setting go?

It is hidden while Products page filters is set to Left sidebar, because the sidebar replaces the buttons. Switch back to Inline chips (default) and the setting returns.
