What “free” actually means on a store builder

Almost every store builder in India uses the word free, and it means at least three different things. It can mean a free plan that publishes a live store indefinitely. It can mean a free trial that takes your store offline on day eight or day fifteen. And it can mean free to build but paid to publish, which is the version that wastes the most of a seller's time, because you find out after you have loaded the catalogue.

This list separates the first from the other two, and ranks on what the free plan lets a real Indian seller do: list products without a cap, take money online rather than only on delivery, hand an order to a courier, and keep the store live. Six things are worth checking on any builder before you commit a catalogue to it.

   Genuine free forever plan, one storefront style

   A real free plan: ₹0 a month with unlimited products on a Shopexer subdomain, Razorpay on the free plan, shipping included on free, WhatsApp order updates, and merchant apps for both Android and iOS — the only builder here with an iOS app. The constraints are design and depth: one storefront style rather than a theme library, and no listed Meta Pixel or Conversions API. Their pricing page returned a 404 when we checked in August 2026, so the free plan was the only plan visible.    Free forever with a 0% platform fee, capped at 3 images per product

   The free plan is listed as Free Forever at ₹0 with unlimited products, up to three images per product, and a 0% platform fee, with Razorpay available on free and WhatsApp notifications listed. Shipping is a Pro feature, which matters more than it sounds — a store that cannot push an order to a courier means you are back to booking pickups manually. Two themes are listed. Paid Pro is listed at ₹999/month as an early-bird price against ₹1,500, or ₹2,500 a quarter.    The free tier is real but tightly bounded: a maximum of 10 products on a Shop2Host subdomain, with cash on delivery and their built-in S2H Pay UPI. Razorpay, Shiprocket and WhatsApp alerts are Pro features, and the Meta Pixel is on Pro too. Paid Pro is listed at ₹690/month, or ₹586/month billed annually. For a ten-product catalogue that takes COD it works; past that the free plan is effectively a trial with no clock on it. These four appear in the same search results and are worth knowing about, but none of them publishes a store for ₹0 on an ongoing basis. That does not make them bad products — a paid plan with a good fit beats a free plan with a bad one — it just means they answer a different question than this page asks.

How to choose in ten minutes

• ✓Count your products and your photos per product. That alone eliminates two of the four free plans for most catalogues.
• ✓Decide whether you need online payment or can live on cash on delivery for now. If you need a gateway, check it is on the free plan and settles into your own account.
• ✓Check whether shipping integration is free. If it is not, add up the minutes per order you will spend booking pickups manually.
• ✓Read the fee line, not the headline. Separate platform commission from payment-gateway charges.
• ✓Look at the paid plan you would move to in month six, and whether your catalogue can be exported if you leave.
• ✓Publish something. All four free plans cost nothing to test, and an afternoon spent live teaches you more than a week of comparison tables — this one included.
