GST rate
Since the GST Council’s September 2025 restructuring most goods sit in 5% or 18%, gold and silver jewellery is generally 3%, and 40% applies to a short list of luxury and demerit goods. Confirm the current rate for your HSN/SAC code before invoicing. Use “Other” for any rate not listed (for example 12% or 28% on an older invoice, or 0.25%).

What this GST calculator does
It handles the two calculations every Indian seller needs. Add GST (exclusive → inclusive) takes a pre-tax base price and a rate and returns the GST amount and the inclusive total. Remove GST (inclusive → exclusive, sometimes called a reverse GST calculator) takes a price that already includes tax and works back to the taxable value and the GST inside it. In both modes you choose whether the sale is within your state (CGST + SGST/UTGST, split equally) or to another state (IGST, the full amount). The current slabs — 0, 3, 5, 18 and 40% — are one tap; any other rate (including 12% or 28% on an older invoice) goes in the custom box.
Add: GST = Base × r ÷ 100 · Total = Base + GST
Remove: Base = Total ÷ (1 + r ÷ 100) · GST = Total − Base
Same state: CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2 · Other state: IGST = GSTHow to use it
Choose the direction
Have a base price and want the listed price? 'Add GST'. Have a listed (inclusive) price and need the taxable value for your invoice or returns? 'Remove GST'.
Enter the amount and pick the rate
Tap one of the current slabs (0, 3, 5, 18, 40%) or type a custom rate. The rate must match your product's HSN code.
Pick the type of sale
Same state for CGST + SGST lines; other state for a single IGST line. The total GST is identical.
Worked examples
Add GST (exclusive → inclusive)
Base price ₹1,000, rate 18%, buyer in the same state.
GST = 1,000 × 0.18 = ₹180 → CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90. Invoice total = ₹1,180.
Same sale shipped to another state: one IGST line of ₹180. Total still ₹1,180.
Remove GST (inclusive → exclusive)
A saree is listed at ₹2,360 inclusive of 18% GST.
Base = 2,360 ÷ 1.18 = ₹2,000. GST = 2,360 − 2,000 = ₹360 (CGST ₹180 + SGST ₹180, or IGST ₹360).
The common mistake is 2,360 × 0.18 = ₹424.80 — that is 18% of the inclusive price, not the GST inside it, and it overstates your tax by ₹64.80.
Jewellery at 3%
A silver pendant with a base price of ₹1,500 at 3%: GST ₹45, total ₹1,545. Same-state split: CGST ₹22.50 + SGST ₹22.50.
Quick reference: ₹1,000 base at each rate
| Rate | GST | Inclusive total | Remove from ₹1,000 inclusive |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3% | ₹30 | ₹1,030 | ₹970.87 base + ₹29.13 |
| 5% | ₹50 | ₹1,050 | ₹952.38 base + ₹47.62 |
| 18% | ₹180 | ₹1,180 | ₹847.46 base + ₹152.54 |
| 40% | ₹400 | ₹1,400 | ₹714.29 base + ₹285.71 |
| 12% (pre-Sep 2025) | ₹120 | ₹1,120 | ₹892.86 base + ₹107.14 |
| 28% (pre-Sep 2025) | ₹280 | ₹1,280 | ₹781.25 base + ₹218.75 |
0, 3, 5, 18 and 40% are the calculator's presets (slabs as restructured by the GST Council in September 2025); 12% and 28% are kept for older invoices via the custom box. Confirm the current slab for your HSN code before invoicing.
GST on an online store: three habits
First, list inclusive prices and keep the breakup on the invoice — buyers in India expect the price they see to be the price they pay. Second, set the rate per product, not per store, because a jewellery brand that also sells gift boxes has two rates. Third, price from your margin before adding GST: work out the base with the product pricing calculator, then add GST here, so the tax never eats the margin. Whether you need registration at all is covered in this guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide by (1 + rate). ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% → 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base, ₹180 GST. Do not subtract 18% of ₹1,180 (that gives ₹967.60, which is wrong). Pick 'Remove GST' in the calculator and it does the division for you.
When is it CGST + SGST and when is it IGST?
If the buyer is in the same state (or union territory) as your registered place of business, the tax splits equally into CGST and SGST/UTGST. If the buyer is in another state, the whole amount is IGST. The total is the same either way; only the invoice lines differ. Most online stores shipping across India raise IGST invoices for out-of-state orders.
Which GST rate applies to my product?
It depends on the HSN code of the product (or SAC code for services). After the GST Council's September 2025 restructuring (in force from 22 September 2025), most goods fall in 5% or 18%, gold and silver jewellery is generally 3%, and a 40% rate applies to a short list of luxury and demerit goods; the older 12% and 28% slabs were largely withdrawn. Rates change, so check the current rate for your HSN code on the official GST portal or with your accountant rather than relying on memory.
Should my online store show prices inclusive or exclusive of GST?
For consumers in India, show the inclusive price. Buyers expect the number on the product page to be what they pay, and a surprise tax line at checkout is a common reason for abandoned carts. Use this calculator in 'Add GST' mode to go from your base price to the listed price, and keep the GST breakup on the invoice.
Do I even need GST registration to sell online?
It depends on your turnover, what you sell and whether you sell through a marketplace or your own store. The rules are specific, so read the guide linked below and confirm with a professional. This calculator is for the arithmetic only; it is not tax advice.
