Instagram shop name ideas: 80 names, and how to pick a handle that matches your domain
A good Instagram shop name is two short words that hint at what you sell, and the same word, run together, is free as the handle, as a domain and as your store link. Below are 80 names across eight categories, each with the handle to try, then the rules for a handle that matches a website, and what to do when the one you want is taken.
Two things to know first. Your shop has two names on Instagram: the handle (the @username, which must be unique) and the Name (the bold line on your profile, which can be anything and is searchable). Most of the advice here is about the handle, because it is the one that has to match a domain. And we have not checked any of these 80 names or handles against Instagram, domain sellers or the trade mark register; the common phrases probably are taken. Treat the list as a starting point.
TL;DR
- • One word everywhere: the handle, the domain and the store link should be the same letters. @hoophabit, hoophabit.com, hoophabit.sitesplaced.site.
- • Letters only. No dots, underscores, hyphens or numbers, because a domain can’t carry an underscore and nobody can say “underscore” on a phone call.
- • Use the Name field for what you sell: “Hoop Habit | Silver Hoops & Studs”. It is searchable; the handle is for the brand.
- • Taken? Add what you sell, add your city, add “by” and your name, swap the order, or pick another. Never buy a handle.
- • 80 names below, ten each for jewellery, clothing, bakers, candles, gifts, handmade, skincare and general shops.
Handle, Name and domain: three things that should be one word
The handle is the @username. It is unique across Instagram, it is what people type to find you, and it is what appears when someone tags you. Instagram allows up to 30 characters of letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. The Name is the bold line under your profile photo. It can have spaces, capitals and symbols, it does not have to be unique, and Instagram search reads it, so this is where “handmade silver jewellery” belongs.
The domain is your website address, such as hoophabit.com. A domain can carry letters, numbers and hyphens, but not underscores, and a dot in a domain separates its parts rather than joining words. Your store link on SitesPlaced, the word before .sitesplaced.site, follows a similar rule: lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens.
Put those rules together and only one kind of handle works everywhere: plain letters run together. @loopandlustre matches loopandlustre.com and loopandlustre.sitesplaced.site. @loop_and_lustre and @loop.and.lustre match nothing. That is the whole trick; the rest of this post is applying it.
How to pick a handle that matches a domain
- Start with two words. One for the feel or the material, one for the product or the place: Hoop Habit, Lather Lab, Gift Gully. One word is almost always taken; three is hard to say.
- Run them together, lower case. That string is your candidate: hoophabit. Drop “the”, “&” becomes “and”, and “Co.” loses its full stop.
- Say it on an imaginary phone call. If you would have to spell it or say “no space, no underscore”, start again.
- Search it in the Instagram app. Free, or held by an account that has not posted in years and sells nothing? Carry on. Held by an active shop? Use the fixes below.
- Search it as a domain. Any domain seller’s search box tells you in seconds whether hoophabit.com or hoophabit.in is free. You do not have to buy it today; you only need to know you can.
- Try it as your store link. On SitesPlaced, a free store lives at an address like hoophabit.sitesplaced.site; the link is set under Settings → Store details and shows “Slug is already taken” if another store has it.
- Claim all three the same day. Create the Instagram account, pick the store link, and buy or at least note the domain. Then tell people.

What to do when the handle is taken
It will happen; short handles are rare. Work down this list, and after each fix check the new version as a domain and as a store link too, so the three still match.
| Fix | Example | What it means for the domain |
|---|---|---|
| Add what you sell | @hoophabit → @hoophabitjewels | hoophabitjewels.com, so the two still match |
| Add your city | @kurtaclub → @kurtaclubpune | Works only if you will stay local |
| Add “by” and your name | @latherlab → @latherlabbysana | Long, but nobody can copy it |
| Swap the word order | @oilandoat → @oatandoil | Check the swapped version everywhere again |
| Pick another name | Go back to the list | Cheapest fix, before anything is printed |
- Don’t add numbers or underscores. @hoophabit_ and @hoophabit22 look like copies of the real account, and neither can match a domain.
- Don’t buy the handle. Buying, selling or transferring a username is against Instagram’s terms, and an account bought that way can be taken back. People offering to sell you a handle are a risk, not a shortcut.
- Don’t wait for an inactive account. There is no form to request a handle that nobody uses. Plan as if it is gone.
- If you hold a registered trade mark and someone is using it as a handle to sell the same kind of thing, Instagram has a trade mark report form. It is for registered marks, not for a name you thought of last week.
Changing the handle later costs more than it looks
You can change the username any time in Edit profile, and Instagram lets you. But every QR code you printed, every link in a WhatsApp group, every old caption where a customer tagged you, now points at a name you no longer hold, and someone else can take it. The Name field is different: change it as often as you like. Settle the handle before you print a single sticker, and treat it the way you would treat the store link on SitesPlaced, which also stops working at the old address when changed and is not redirected.
The five checks, in order
For an Instagram shop the handle comes first, because it is the hardest to get. Stop and pick another name as soon as one check fails.
| Check | Where | If it is taken |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram handle | Search the name in the Instagram app | Use one of the five fixes above, then re-check the domain |
| Domain | The search box on any domain seller’s site | Try .in if .com is gone, keeping the same word as the handle |
| Store link | Settings → Store details in your SitesPlaced store | You will see “Slug is already taken”; use the same fix as the handle |
| Search the name with your product and city | If a shop selling the same thing shows up, move on | |
| Trade mark | The public search on the IP India website | Choose another name; ask a trade mark lawyer if unsure |
On the trade mark check: a trade mark is a name or logo registered to one business for a kind of product. India’s trade mark office, IP India (ipindia.gov.in), has a free public search. A free handle is not permission to use a registered name. Registering your own mark is a separate step with its own forms and costs; for that, and for anything you are unsure about, check with a trade mark lawyer. For the difference between .com, .in and .store, read how to choose a name and domain for your online store.
The label test, Instagram edition
For an Instagram shop, the handle is the label. It goes on the sticker that seals the parcel, on the thank-you card, in the corner of every reel and on the story sticker that says “follow”. Write “@” and your candidate by hand on a sticker about 3 cm across. If you have to shrink the letters, the handle is too long, however clever it is.
Most of the handles in this post are between eight and fifteen letters, and that is a good range to aim for. Put the handle, not the website, on the sticker: a buyer who liked the parcel will look for the next one on Instagram first, and your bio takes them to the store from there.
Put the name to work the same day
Once a name passes the checks, claim it everywhere at once: the Instagram handle, your WhatsApp Business name, and your store. On SitesPlaced a store is free to open, with 0% commission: unlimited products and orders, UPI and cards through your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account, cash on delivery and WhatsApp checkout, on any of 16 free templates. Your free address, yourname.sitesplaced.site, is live the moment you pick the store link, and it goes in the bio under the same name as the handle, so a buyer never wonders if they have the right shop.
Your own domain, such as yourname.com, comes with the Starter plan at ₹199/month or ₹1,990 a year. In India you can also pay ₹199 once for 30 days, with no autopay. Starter removes the SitesPlaced badge and makes your store’s pages answer about 4× faster than on the free plan: about 75 ms instead of about 330 ms, measured on live paid stores on 28 September 2026. “Answer” means how soon the page starts arriving, before the photos load. The code FREE7 gives 7 days free on Starter or Growth when you set up autopay; cancel before the first charge and you pay nothing. To turn the account you already have into a store, see Instagram to website, and for the selling side, from DMs to delivery, how to sell on Instagram in India.
Frequently asked questions
What should I name my Instagram shop?
Pick a short name of two words that hints at what you sell, and make sure the same word is free as an Instagram handle, as a domain and as your store link. Letters only, no dots, underscores or numbers, so it reads the same everywhere. Put what you sell in the Name field, which is searchable, and keep the handle for the brand.
Should my Instagram handle be the same as my business name?
Yes, as close as the rules allow. The business name can have spaces, an ampersand and capital letters; the handle is the same words run together in lower case. “Loop & Lustre” becomes @loopandlustre. If the handle has to be different from the name, buyers who see the name on a box will not find you.
Does my Instagram handle need to match my domain?
It should. If your handle is @hoophabit, your website should be hoophabit.com or hoophabit.in, and your free store link hoophabit.sitesplaced.site. One word everywhere means a buyer can guess your website from your handle and your handle from your website. Check all three before you announce the name.
What do I do if my Instagram username is taken?
Add what you sell (@hoophabitjewels), add your city, add “by” and your name, swap the word order, or pick another name. Then check the new version as a domain and as a store link too. Do not try to buy the handle: buying or selling usernames is against Instagram’s terms. If the account is inactive, there is no form to request it; plan as if it is gone.
Should I use underscores or dots in my Instagram handle?
Avoid both. Instagram allows full stops and underscores, but a domain cannot contain an underscore and a dot in a domain means something else, so @loop_and_lustre can never match a website. Underscores are also hard to say out loud and easy to mistype. Run the words together instead.
How long can an Instagram username be?
Up to 30 characters, using letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. Aim for far fewer. A handle you can say in one breath, with no spelling needed, is the goal; most of the examples in this post are between eight and fifteen letters.
Can I change my Instagram shop name later?
You can change both the Name and the username in Edit profile. Changing the Name is harmless. Changing the username breaks every printed QR code, every bio link elsewhere and every old caption that tagged you, and the old username can be taken by someone else. Settle on it before you print anything.
Can I use a famous brand’s name as my Instagram handle if it is free?
No. A free handle is not permission. Instagram has a trade mark report form for registered marks, and the brand can use it to have your account removed, on top of a legal notice. Check the public trade mark search on the IP India website, and if in doubt ask a trade mark lawyer.
Got the handle? Claim the matching store link
Open a free store under the same name as your handle, add your products and put one link in your bio. 0% commission, with UPI, cash on delivery and WhatsApp checkout included.
