Free vs paid store templates in 2026: do you really need to buy a theme?

For most small Indian sellers, no. A paid theme buys design, settings and the theme maker’s support, but it does not bring buyers, and on the big platforms it sits on top of a monthly plan and often a few paid apps. What sells is what the template does on a phone. Here is what a paid theme really gets you, when it is worth buying, and what paying for SitesPlaced adds (it is not the template).

The short answer

Key takeaway

Buy a theme only when you need something no free template does, and you have the budget and the help to keep it looking right. If you are starting out or selling a small range, a free template built for your kind of product does the job. On SitesPlaced all 16 store templates are free on every plan; you pay only for your own domain and removing the badge, or for the tools that grow sales.

What a paid theme actually buys you

  • A design with more sections and settings than the platform’s free themes, usually aimed at a particular kind of shop.
  • Support and updates from the theme maker. How long and how much varies from theme to theme, so read the terms before you buy.
  • A one-off price. When we checked Shopify’s theme store in September 2026, it listed 24 free themes and paid themes priced from about $100 to $500. Shopify’s help pages describe a paid theme as a one-time purchase that is licensed to one store, so a second store means buying it again.

That is real value for a brand with a designer and a clear idea of what it wants. But look at what is not on the list.

What a paid theme does not include

  • The platform itself. On the big platforms, the theme runs on top of a monthly plan.
  • Many selling features. Product reviews, upsells and WhatsApp ordering are often separate apps, and many apps carry their own monthly fee. See Shopify apps vs SitesPlaced integrations for how that adds up.
  • Set-up. A theme looks like its demo only once your photos, text and settings are in. Plenty of sellers pay someone to do it; see what it costs to hire a Shopify store designer.
  • Buyers. A new theme does not bring traffic. It only changes what happens once people arrive.

When paying for a theme makes sense

Being fair about it, a paid theme is the better call in a few cases:

  • You already run a store on a big platform and your current theme is what is holding the store back. Buying a better theme is cheaper than moving.
  • You have a designer or developer who will change the theme’s code to build pages no template offers.
  • Your brand needs a look that is entirely its own and you have the budget to keep it maintained as the platform changes.

If none of those describe you, the extra money is better spent on product photos, samples for reviewers or a few days of ads.

When a free template is the better choice

  • You are starting out. Launch free, learn what sells, and spend money only on what your numbers say is missing.
  • You sell a small range. In our own data from small online stores, among 136 stocked live stores the median store carried 6 products and about 96% carried 15 or fewer. A theme built to organise thousands of products solves a problem you do not have.
  • Your buyers come from Instagram and WhatsApp. They land on a phone and want to pay by UPI or cash on delivery. That is about the checkout and the product page, not the theme’s price.
  • You want the selling features without stacking apps. On SitesPlaced’s eleven brand-style templates, quick add from the card, the buy bar on phones, the delivery and COD line and coupon codes on the product page are built in, free.

Try the free templates on your phone before deciding: Clothing · Beauty · Jewellery · Home · Electronics · Food · Footwear · Gifts · Wellness · Pet · Furniture.

A simple way to decide

  1. Start on a free template made for what you sell. Use the 10-point checklist or the ecommerce templates built for India to pick one.
  2. Take your first orders. Put the link in your Instagram bio and WhatsApp. If orders are slow, read which template will actually increase your sales and why your online store is not getting sales.
  3. Pay for what is missing, not for a look. Your own domain is ₹199/month; reviews and boosters are ₹499/month. Buy a theme elsewhere only if you hit one of the cases above.

FAQs

Do I need to buy a theme for my online store?

Usually not. A free template made for your kind of product covers what a small store needs: a phone-first layout, product cards that show what buyers check, and a checkout that takes UPI, cards and cash on delivery. Buy a theme only if you need a design no free template offers and have the budget to maintain it.

Are paid themes better than free templates?

They usually have more sections and settings, and support from the theme maker. They are not automatically better at selling. What sells is what the page does: the right information on the product card, few taps to buy and delivery and COD details next to the button. SitesPlaced’s eleven brand-style templates do all of that and are free.

How much does a paid Shopify theme cost?

When we checked in September 2026, Shopify’s theme store listed paid themes from about $100 to $500, and 24 free themes. Shopify describes a paid theme as a one-time purchase licensed to one store. The theme comes on top of the monthly Shopify plan and any paid apps you add.

Which is better: a paid Shopify theme or a free SitesPlaced template?

Shopify with a paid theme is a strong choice for an established brand with a developer and a monthly budget for the plan, the theme and apps. For a small Indian seller, SitesPlaced is the better choice: the templates are free, eleven are laid out like leading Indian D2C brands, UPI, COD and WhatsApp orders are built into the checkout, and the store publishes free at 0% commission.

What do I pay for on SitesPlaced if the templates are free?

Only what you choose to add. Starter (₹199/month) gives you your own domain, removes the SitesPlaced badge and adds analytics and Meta ad tracking. Growth (₹499/month) adds product reviews, sales boosters such as Buy X Get Y, loyalty cards and WhatsApp API alerts. Taking orders is free on every plan.

Will a free template make my store look cheap?

Not the template itself. What looks cheap is sample text nobody rewrote, stock photos and a layout that does not fit the product. SitesPlaced’s brand-style templates fill themselves from your own products and ship with no sample sentences. The small SitesPlaced badge on the free plan can be removed with Starter.

Can I move my store from Shopify to SitesPlaced?

Yes. The Growth plan includes a done-for-you migration from Shopify, Dukaan, dm2buy or a website, and the importer can bring products in from an existing store’s website. Your new store can be live before you switch off the old one.

Keep the theme money. Start free.

Pick the free template for what you sell, add your products and publish, with UPI, COD and WhatsApp checkout at 0% commission.
