Is it too late to start a Diwali business in October? The honest answer

No, it is not too late, if you keep it small. Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026 and Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. A short range, sold from stock you already hold, to people who know you or live near you, can start in October and still deliver on time. It is too late for anything that someone has to manufacture for you, for stock that takes weeks to arrive, and for a plan that depends on strangers finding you on Google.

Key takeaway: count backwards from your courier’s last pickup date, not from 8 November. With five weeks left you can still ship a small range across the zones your courier promises. With three weeks left, sell ready stock and hampers made from it. With one week left, sell only what you can hand over yourself in your own city. If your product needs more time than you have, open the store anyway and aim it at the wedding season.

TL;DR

  • • The real deadline is your last order date: the courier’s last pickup date minus your packing days.
  • • Five weeks left: a small range, made-to-order with a cut-off, courier delivery.
  • • Three weeks left: ready stock, hampers, a capped number of custom pieces.
  • • One week left: local delivery and pickup only.
  • • Drop: custom manufacturing, long-wait stock, printed packaging, a big catalogue.
  • • The store is not the delay. It can be live the same day, free.

The deadline is not 8 November

A Diwali gift that arrives on 10 November is a late gift. So the date that decides everything is the last day you can accept an order and still get it to the buyer in time. We call it your last order date.

To find it, ask your courier one question: what is the last pickup date that still reaches each zone before 8 November? A zone is how couriers group places by distance: your own city, nearby states, metros, the rest of India. Every courier sets its own festive dates and they change each year, so we don’t list any here. If you book through Shiprocket or Shipmozo, ask them for the couriers they will use.

Then subtract the days you need to pack. As an example: if the last pickup for a zone is a Thursday and you need two days to pack, your last order date for that zone is the Tuesday before. Far zones will have an earlier date than your own city. That one fact shapes the rest of this page: the later you start, the closer to home you sell.

What is realistic, by weeks left

Time leftWhat still worksWhat to drop
5 weeks left (around Sunday 4 October)A small range from stock you hold or can get within a week. Made-to-order with a cut-off. Hampers. Courier delivery, once your courier confirms its dates.Custom manufacturing, custom-printed boxes, stock with a long wait.
3 weeks left (around Sunday 18 October)Ready stock only, and hampers put together from it. A small, capped number of made-to-order pieces. Your city and the zones your courier still promises.New suppliers, products you have never made, far zones your courier will not promise.
1 week left (around Sunday 1 November)Hand delivery and pickup in your own city. Ready stock. Gifts for Dhanteras and Diwali day for people near you.Courier promises, made-to-order, anything new.

Weeks are counted back from Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026. Courier reach depends on your courier’s own dates, so confirm them before you promise delivery.

With five weeks left

This is a comfortable start for a small seller. You have time to choose a range, photograph it, open the store and spend three or four weeks telling people about it.

  • Keep the range short. Eight to twelve products you can deliver without help. Ideas by budget are in Diwali business ideas you can start from home.
  • Buy stock from suppliers who deliver within a week. Ask each one for their own last dispatch date before Diwali. They are busy this month too.
  • Take made-to-order work, with a cut-off. Decide the last date you will accept a custom piece and how many you can make. Say both on the product page.
  • Ship by courier to the zones your courier promises, and publish your last order date.
  • Open the store in the first evening, not the last. The steps are in how to start an online store before Diwali.

What to let go of even now: packaging printed with your logo (use plain boxes and a sticker or a handwritten card), and any product that a factory or workshop has to make from scratch.

With three weeks left

Three weeks is enough to sell. It is not enough to wait for anything. Build the whole plan around stock that is already in your home or can be bought from a local wholesaler this week.

  • Sell hampers made from ready stock. A hamper is a set of products packed as one gift. You can put one together from things you already hold, in a plain box. The full method is in how to sell Diwali gift hampers online.
  • Cap custom work. If you paint, stitch or bake to order, fix a small number and stop when it is reached.
  • Sell closer to home. Your own city and the zones your courier still promises. Say clearly where you deliver.
  • Ask for office orders. One person buying ten boxes for a team is easier to serve than ten separate buyers. See how small businesses win corporate gifting orders.
  • Spend your time on telling people, not on design. Your first orders will come from people who already know you. The method is in how a new store gets its first Diwali orders.

With one week left

With a week to go, stop thinking about couriers unless yours tells you, in writing, that a parcel will still arrive. Think about your own city.

  • Deliver by hand, or offer pickup. You, a family member or a local delivery rider. Name the areas you cover.
  • Sell only what is packed and ready. No custom work and no new products.
  • Say the exact days. “Delivery in Indore on 5 and 6 November” is a promise a buyer can plan around.
  • Take payment before you travel, by UPI, or collect cash at the door if you deliver yourself.
  • Serve the late buyers. Some people only remember a gift in the last few days before Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. A seller nearby who can deliver tomorrow is exactly what they are looking for.

Be honest with buyers outside your city: tell them the parcel would arrive after Diwali and let them decide. A late gift with a warning is forgiven. A late gift that was promised on time is not.

What to drop, whatever the date

  • Custom manufacturing. If a factory, printer or workshop has to make your product, their queue decides your date, not you.
  • Long-wait stock. Anything ordered from far away that may arrive in November is money locked in a box.
  • Custom-printed packaging. Plain boxes, tissue, a ribbon and a card look cared for. Ideas are in Diwali packaging and gift wrapping ideas.
  • A big catalogue. Forty products means forty sets of photos, prices and stock counts.
  • Waiting for search. A new store can take months to appear on Google. This season, your visitors come from links you share.
  • Festive stock you can’t sell later. Prefer products that are still gifts in December.

When to aim for the wedding season instead

The wedding season follows Diwali, and wedding buyers want many of the same things: gift boxes, return gifts, jewellery, ethnic wear, sweets, décor. Aim for it instead of Diwali if any of these is true:

  • • Your product takes longer to make than the time you have left.
  • • Your stock or packaging can’t reach you before your last order date.
  • • You would have to borrow money to buy festive stock that won’t sell after 8 November.
  • • You can’t pack and send orders yourself in the last two weeks of October.

Even then, open the store now. It costs nothing, and a store that has been live for a few weeks, with real products and a few orders from friends, is a better starting point than an empty one in November. Take a handful of local Diwali orders as practice. After Diwali you keep the same link and the same products, and change the wording. What to do next is in what to do in your store after Diwali.

Five questions to decide tonight

  • 1. Is the stock in my hands, or promised to me by a date I trust?
  • 2. Has my courier given me a last pickup date, or will I deliver myself?
  • 3. Can I name thirty people who might buy a gift from me or tell someone who will?
  • 4. After the product, packaging, delivery and payment fee, is there still profit in each order?
  • 5. Can I give this one to two hours a day until my last order date?

Four or five times “yes” means start today. Two or fewer means plan for the wedding season and use Diwali to practise. For question 4, the free profit margin calculator does the sum, and what a Diwali online store costs lists every cost line.

Why a late start is easier on SitesPlaced

When time is short, the store should not use any of it. These are the parts that matter for a late start, and all of them are on the free plan at 0% commission:

  • Live the same day. 16 free store templates, and a free importer that brings products in from a public Instagram profile or an existing website.
  • Payments that work tonight. Cash on delivery, direct UPI and WhatsApp checkout need no approval. Online payments run through your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account once it is approved.
  • A cap on orders. Type the number you can make as the product’s stock count. Checkout refuses to sell more than that.
  • Local delivery. A checkbox at checkout lets buyers in your city skip the delivery charge. Check the address on each order before you confirm it, because the store does not check pincodes.
  • Your last order date on every page. The announcement bar is under Settings → Branding. You edit it by hand.
  • Pause ordering. When you stop shipping, one checkbox under Settings → Checkout closes ordering and shows your own message, while shoppers can still browse. It stays paused until you untick it.
  • A build-your-own hamper page, so buyers pick from your ready stock.

On every paid plan, from Starter at ₹199/month, a store’s pages also answer about 4× faster than on the free plan: about 75 ms instead of about 330 ms, measured on 28 September 2026 on live paid stores. “Answer” is the moment a page starts arriving on the shopper’s phone, before the photos load. A late start means most of your visitors arrive in a few busy days, on phones, from WhatsApp and Instagram links, which is when a quick answer helps. The code FREE7 gives 7 days free on Starter or Growth when you set up autopay; cancel before the first charge and you pay nothing.

Other routes have their place. Selling only through Instagram DMs or WhatsApp needs no setup at all, and a marketplace brings shoppers of its own, though a new seller account there has its own approval steps and fees. Our verdict for a late start: a free SitesPlaced store that is live tonight, with WhatsApp and Instagram sending people to it, because you keep the whole sale and you can stop orders the moment you are full.

Frequently asked questions

Is October too late to start a Diwali business?

Not for a small business that sells a short range from ready stock to people who already know the seller, or who live nearby. It is too late for anything that needs custom manufacturing, stock with a long wait, or an audience built from nothing through search. Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026, so the earlier in October you start, the more of India you can still deliver to.

What is the last date to start selling for Diwali 2026?

There is no single date. For courier orders, it depends on the last pickup date your courier gives you for each zone, minus the days you need to pack. For hand delivery in your own city, you can take orders until a day or two before Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, as long as the stock is already with you.

What can I sell for Diwali at the last minute?

Things you already hold or can assemble in a day: gift hampers made from ready stock, gift boxes, diyas and candles you have bought or made, and whatever you already sell with festive wrapping added. If you sell food, check the FSSAI rules first. Avoid anything that needs a supplier to make it for you.

Should I take made-to-order Diwali orders in October?

Yes, if you set two limits. First, a cut-off date after which you take no more made-to-order work. Second, a cap on the number of pieces. On SitesPlaced, type the number you can make as the product’s stock count, and checkout stops taking orders when it reaches zero.

Should I wait for the wedding season instead?

Aim for the wedding season if your product takes longer to make than the time you have left, if your stock cannot arrive in time, or if you would have to borrow money for festive stock that will not sell after Diwali. The store you open now still works for weddings: same link, same products, new wording.

How fast can I get an online store live?

On SitesPlaced, the same day. Creating the store takes a few minutes, and adding ten products with photos and prices takes an evening. Cash on delivery, direct UPI and WhatsApp checkout work as soon as you switch them on, while a payment gateway reviews your store. Publishing is free.

Not too late. Start with the store.

Open a free store today, add the products you already hold, and publish your last order date. 0% commission, with UPI, cash on delivery and WhatsApp checkout included.
