How to sell Diwali gift hampers online — what goes in, what to charge, and how to get it there before 8 November

A Diwali hamper sells when it solves the buyer’s real problem: they need a good-looking gift for someone else, at a clear price, delivered before the festival. Get those three right and the items almost choose themselves. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, so you have about six weeks. Here is how to plan the hamper, price it, pack it, sell it online and ship it in time.

Key takeaway: sell three fixed hampers at clear price points, each built around one hero item, packed to survive a courier. Give buyers who like to choose a build-your-own page. Work out the full cost of each hamper (items, box, filler, card, delivery and payment fee) before you set the price. Then ask your courier for their Diwali cut-off, publish an order-by date, and stop promising Diwali delivery after it.

TL;DR

  • • Start from the buyer: who is the gift for, what budget, and which city it is going to.
  • • One hero item, two to four supporting items, and a card. Skip anything that melts, leaks or cracks unless you pack for it.
  • • Three price tiers, priced from the full cost of the hamper, not just the items.
  • • Pack twice: a gift box inside a plain outer carton, with no empty space.
  • • Let people build their own. On SitesPlaced the “Build your own hamper” page is free.
  • • Publish an order-by date you have checked with your courier, and keep it.

Start with who the hamper is for

Almost nobody buys a Diwali hamper for themselves. They buy it for parents, in-laws, a manager, a client, or a friend in another city. So before you choose a single item, write down the three buyers you expect. For example: someone sending a gift to their parents in another city with about ₹1,000 to spend; a young professional gifting six teammates at about ₹500 each; a small company sending fifty boxes to its clients. Each of them needs a different hamper.

Then give each hamper a theme, so it feels chosen rather than assembled: sweets and dry fruits, puja and diyas, self-care, tea and snacks, or “first Diwali in a new home”. A theme also makes the name, the photo and the caption easy to write.

Choosing the items

  • One hero item. The thing in the middle of the photo that the recipient notices first: a brass diya, a candle set, a box of good dry fruits, a small perfume. It carries most of the perceived value.
  • Two to four supporting items that fit the same theme. More items is not always better. Five small things that don’t go together look cheaper than three that do.
  • A card. It costs a few rupees and it is often the part people remember. Offer a printed or handwritten message.
  • Things that travel and keep. Chocolates melt, oils leak, glass and clay crack; use them only if you pack for it. Food has to arrive well within its best-before date, allowing for courier time.
  • Food rules. If you make, pack or repack food yourself, you generally need FSSAI registration or a licence, applied for on FSSAI’s FoSCoS portal. Reselling sealed, branded packs can be different. Confirm what applies to you with FSSAI or a consultant before you sell.
  • Stock of every item. A hamper is only as available as its scarcest item. Order enough of each for the number of hampers you plan to sell, plus a few spares for breakages.

Price tiers, with a worked example

Three tiers let a buyer choose by budget instead of comparing items one by one. The mistake to avoid is pricing from the cost of the items alone. A hamper has more costs than its contents, and they add up. Here is a worked example with round numbers. Use your own supplier prices; these are only for illustration.

Cost per hamperClassic, sells at ₹799Premium, sells at ₹1,499Grand, sells at ₹2,499
Items inside₹320₹640₹1,100
Box, filler and ribbon₹70₹110₹180
Card and printing₹10₹15₹25
Delivery (you pay it if delivery is free)₹90₹110₹140
Payment fee (2% used as a round example)₹16₹30₹50
Allowance for breakage and replacements₹20₹40₹60
Total cost per hamper₹526₹945₹1,555
Left for you₹273 (about 34%)₹554 (about 37%)₹944 (about 38%)

Example only. The 2% payment fee is a round figure for the sum, not a quote; check your gateway’s rate card. If you are registered for GST, decide whether your prices include it and ask your CA how to show it.

Two things to notice. First, delivery is one of the biggest lines, which is why a bigger box can quietly eat the margin (see packaging below). Second, the allowance for breakage is real money: set it aside, because one broken diya set means a second hamper and a second delivery. Our free product pricing calculator and profit margin calculator do this sum for you, and how to price your products covers the thinking behind it.

Packaging that survives a courier

  • The gift box is not the shipping box. Put the gift box inside a plain outer carton with padding. Otherwise the courier label, the tape and the scuffs end up on the part the recipient is meant to admire.
  • No empty space. Fill gaps with paper shred or crinkle paper so nothing moves. Close the box and shake it. If you hear anything, add more filler.
  • Wrap the risky items on their own. Bubble-wrap glass and clay, tape the lids of jars, and put anything liquid in a sealed pouch.
  • Watch the box size. Couriers charge on whichever is higher: the actual weight, or the “volumetric weight” worked out from the box’s length, width and height. A large, light box can cost more to ship than a small, heavy one. Ask your courier for the formula they use and choose a box that fits the tier snugly.
  • Photograph each hamper before you seal it. If the recipient reports a damaged item, the photo shows what left your hands.

Fixed hampers, or let buyers build their own?

Do both. Fixed hampers are for people who don’t want to choose. List each one as its own product with its own photo, price and stock count, so your store stops selling it when you run out. Put all of them in a “Diwali hampers” category so every post and message can point at one link.

Build-your-own is for people who know exactly what their mother likes. On a SitesPlaced store, this is a switch: Settings → Sales boosters → Build your own hamper. Unlike the paid boosters on that page, it works on the free plan. Here is what it does, as it works today:

  • • A page on your store at /build-your-hamper (for example yourbrand.sitesplaced.site/build-your-hamper). Add it to your menu under Navigation & menu.
  • • You set the fewest and most items in a hamper (it starts at 3 and 8), the page heading and intro line, and which categories shoppers pick from.
  • • An optional packaging product (box, ribbon and card) is added to every hamper and charged once.
  • • An optional hamper price list, such as “4 for ₹999”. The shopper pays the cheapest mix of your sizes, and never more than the items would cost on their own.
  • • A product that comes in options, like 50 g or 100 g, asks which one before it goes in.
  • • In the cart, the buyer can add a photo and a message for the card. You can switch either off.
  • • The hamper sits in the cart as one group and reaches you in Orders as one hamper with its contents listed (and the same way in the WhatsApp message, when the buyer checks out on WhatsApp). Every item is a real product, so its own stock count still applies.

A simple way to use the price list: make a “Diwali picks” category of items priced close together, say ₹249 to ₹349, and offer “any 4 for ₹999”. Keep the prices in that category similar, because the hamper price applies to whatever the shopper picks. Separately, any product can offer paid extras such as “Gift wrapping +₹80” and a text note for the card, under Personalisation & extras on the product. Those are free to set up too. If you are choosing a design, the Gifts & Lifestyle Store template has shop-by-occasion built in; more options are in the best gift shop website templates.

Personal buyers and corporate buyers

How they payOnline or cash on delivery at checkoutUsually bank transfer, often with an advance

Your store handles personal buyers on its own. Corporate orders are a sale you make in conversation, with a quote, a sample and an advance. That is a different skill, and we cover it step by step in how to win and handle corporate gifting orders.

When the gift goes to someone else’s door

  • Ask for the recipient’s phone number. Couriers call the number on the parcel. Turn on the Order Notes field under Settings → Checkout → Checkout form fields and rename it, for example “Recipient’s phone number and gift message”. It is free.
  • Keep the price out of the parcel. On SitesPlaced the invoice is a PDF you download from the order when you need it; nothing prints into the box by itself. Send the invoice to the buyer on WhatsApp instead.
  • Think twice about cash on delivery for gifts. A recipient who wasn’t expecting to pay may refuse the parcel, and you pay delivery both ways. Ask for payment online on hampers, or add a COD charge under Settings → Checkout so paying online is cheaper. More in how to reduce RTO and fake COD orders.

Cut-off dates: the one promise you must keep

Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. A hamper that arrives on 10 November is not a Diwali gift any more, and the buyer will remember who sent it late.

So work backwards. Ask your courier, or Shiprocket or Shipmozo if you book through them, for their last hand-over date for delivery before Diwali to each zone. Festive volumes can slow deliveries, so don’t assume normal timings. Then subtract your own packing time. For example: if your courier says “hand over by 30 October for most cities” and you need two days to pack, your order-by date is 28 October. That is an example, not a date to copy; get the real one from your courier.

Put the date in your announcement bar (Settings → Branding) and in every hamper description. After it, you have three honest choices: offer an express option at an extra charge (Settings → Shipping → Delivery speed options) only if your courier can really meet it, change the wording to “delivered after Diwali”, or pause ordering for a few days (Settings → Checkout → Pause ordering). All three are free. The week-by-week marketing plan, from creatives to broadcasts, is in your Diwali campaign, planned by AI, and the operational checklist is in the Diwali 2026 checklist for online stores.

When the rush arrives

A good hamper reel or a WhatsApp broadcast sends many people to your store at the same moment. On every paid plan (Starter at ₹199/month and up), a store’s pages answer about 4× faster than on the free plan: about 75 ms instead of about 330 ms, in our 28 September 2026 measurements on live paid stores. “Answer” means the moment the page starts arriving on the shopper’s phone, before the photos load. Every edit, price or stock change still shows at once, so a sold-out hamper shows as sold out straight away.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put in a Diwali gift hamper?

One hero item the recipient will notice (a brass diya, a candle set, good dry fruits, a small perfume), two to four supporting items on the same theme, and a card. Avoid anything that melts, leaks or cracks unless you pack for it, and make sure food arrives well within its best-before date.

How much should I charge for a Diwali hamper?

Add up the full cost of one hamper first (items, box and filler, card, delivery if free, payment fee, a breakage allowance), then set three tiers so buyers choose by budget. In our worked example, hampers at ₹799, ₹1,499 and ₹2,499 leave about 34% to 38% after every cost. Do the sum with your own supplier prices.

Can customers build their own hamper on my website?

On SitesPlaced, yes, on the free plan. Switch on Build your own hamper under Settings → Sales boosters. Shoppers pick items from the categories you choose, within the limits you set, with an optional packaging product and an optional price list such as 4 for ₹999. They can add a photo and a card message, and the hamper reaches you as one order with its contents listed.

When should I stop taking Diwali hamper orders?

Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026. Ask your courier (or Shiprocket or Shipmozo) for their last hand-over date for delivery before Diwali to each zone, subtract your packing time, and publish that as your order-by date. After it, say clearly that orders arrive after Diwali, or pause ordering.

Do I need a licence to sell food hampers?

If you make, pack or repack food yourself, you generally need FSSAI registration or a licence, applied for on FSSAI’s FoSCoS portal. If you only resell sealed, branded packs, what you need can be different. Confirm with FSSAI or a food-licensing consultant before you sell; this post is not legal advice.

Should I offer cash on delivery on gift hampers?

Be careful. A recipient who wasn’t expecting to pay may refuse the parcel, and you pay delivery both ways. Ask for payment online on gifts, or add a COD charge so paying online is cheaper. On SitesPlaced both settings are under Settings → Checkout.
