Best free online store builders in 2026 — the free plans that really let you sell
Nearly every store builder has the word “free” on its home page. Free to design a page is not free to take an order, and free to take an order is not the same as keeping the money. We put thirteen free tiers through the same questions and ranked what came out.
If you sell in India, SitesPlaced is the best free online store builder in 2026: ₹0 to publish, unlimited products, UPI, cards, cash on delivery and WhatsApp checkout on your own payment account, and 0% commission. Outside India the answer depends on what you sell. Big Cartel is free and takes nothing, but stops at five products. Payhip and Gumroad are free to start and take 5% and 10% plus 50¢ of every sale. Wix's free tier cannot sell at all. Every figure below is as of September 2026 and carries the date of the comparison it came from.
TL;DR
- • Free, sells, 0% commission, no product cap: SitesPlaced. The catch is a small badge, 500 MB and the builder's address until you pay ₹199/month.
- • Free, sells, 0%, five products: Big Cartel.
- • Free to start, a cut of every sale: Payhip (5%), Beacons (9%), Gumroad (10% + 50¢). Cheap at low volume, expensive the moment it works.
- • Free, fee hidden in the product: Fourthwall, which prints and ships merch for you.
- • Free but cannot sell: Wix's free tier. Free software, not a free store: WooCommerce.
- • In India: Shopexer, StartupInMinutes and Shop2Host publish for ₹0 with limits; Dukaan's free plan carries a per-order service fee. Shopify, Squarespace, Sellfy, Stan Store, WSTORES, FlexiCommerce, StoreMaker, StoreBase and Alippo are not free.
How we judged a “free” plan
The word free hides three products: a store you can design but not check out from, a store that sells but takes a percentage of every order, and a store that sells and takes nothing, with a limit somewhere else. So every builder got the same five questions:
- Does the free plan publish a live store you can share? A store you can only preview is a demo.
- Can a buyer pay you, and where does the money go? Into your own bank or payment account, or held and paid out by the platform.
- Can you use your own domain? A domain is the address people type, like yourbrand.com. Nearly every free plan gives you a sub-address on the builder's name instead.
- What does the builder take from each sale? The commission. It is separate from the payment gateway's fee, which every online payment carries and which goes to the gateway (Razorpay, Stripe, PayPal), not the builder.
- What forces the upgrade, and what does it cost then? The number that matters is not today's ₹0 but month six.
On facts: we state a competitor's price, fee or limit only if it already appears in a comparison we have published, with the month it was checked. Prices change; check their pricing page. SitesPlaced figures come from our own plan definitions, and SitesPlaced gets the same “not good at” line as everyone else.
The ranking, worldwide
1. SitesPlaced — free, sells, 0% commission, no product cap
The free plan publishes a real store on a yourname.sitesplaced.siteaddress with unlimited products and orders. In India a buyer pays by UPI, card or net banking through your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account, chooses cash on delivery (with an optional COD charge you set), or orders over WhatsApp; outside India you connect your own Stripe or PayPal. Coupons, a free-shipping bar, PDF invoices, Shiprocket and Shipmozo couriers, the store importer (which builds the catalogue from an Instagram account, a website or a PDF) and all 16 store templates are included at ₹0. SitesPlaced takes 0% of every sale on every plan; the only deduction is the gateway's own fee.
The limits: a small SitesPlaced badge, 500 MB of storage, up to 5 sites, and the builder's address. Starter, at ₹199/month or ₹1,990/year ($7.99 a month outside India), adds your own domain, removes the badge, gives 2 GB, analytics, Meta Pixel with the Conversions API, and store pages that answer about 4× faster than on the free plan — measured on 30 September 2026 on live paid stores, where a page answered in about 75 ms instead of about 330 ms. Growth at ₹499/month adds the sales boosters, product reviews, the loyalty programme and WhatsApp Business API alerts. Code FREE7 gives 7 days free on either plan when you set up autopay; cancel before the first charge and pay nothing.
- • Good at: being a complete Indian store for ₹0 — payments to your own account, COD, WhatsApp, couriers and invoices without a paid plan. 45 real customer stores with 1,300+ products are on the live showcase.
- • Not good at: handling your taxes for you (Gumroad and Payhip do that as the seller of record), an iPhone merchant app (Android only for now), and bringing you traffic — a store on your own address has no built-in audience. We have verified all of this for Indian sellers; elsewhere, check the integrations page first.
- • What forces the upgrade: your own domain, the badge, storage past 500 MB, or the faster pages. Never products, orders or payments.
2. Payhip — free with unlimited products, 5% of each sale
The fairest of the pay-per-sale platforms. No monthly fee, no product cap, and 5% of every sale on the free plan; $29/month brings that to 2%. It sells digital downloads well, handles EU VAT for you, and is genuinely simple. A custom domain sits on the paid plans; physical products are basic. As listed in late August 2026.
- • Good at: selling a file to Europe without thinking about VAT.
- • Not good at: volume. Example: $1,000 of sales in a month costs $50 on the free plan, every month, against a flat $7.99 (Starter) or $14.99 (Growth) on SitesPlaced with no cut.
- • What forces the upgrade: arithmetic. See Payhip alternative.
3. Big Cartel — free and 0% commission, up to five products
Big Cartel has served artists and makers quietly for years. The free plan takes no commission, supports a custom domain and is very easy to run. The limit is the product cap: five, and a print in three sizes and two colourways is already six. Digital downloads are limited, shipping is rates only, and there is no real blog. Checked late August 2026.
- • Good at: a tiny catalogue, simplicity, taking nothing from your sales.
- • Not good at: a range. Most makers hit five products within a season.
- • What forces the upgrade: your sixth product. See Big Cartel alternative.
4. Gumroad — $0 a month, 10% plus 50¢ of every sale
The easiest place to start selling a file and the most expensive place to keep doing it. No monthly fee, no revenue cap; instead 10% plus 50¢ from every sale, on every plan. What that buys is real: Gumroad is the legal seller of record, so US sales tax and EU VAT are their problem, and Gumroad has its own audience browsing and buying. You get a product page and a profile rather than a website, and it is not built for physical goods. As listed in late August 2026.
- • Good at: the first sale, tax handled, some discovery, zero cost in a month with no sales.
- • Not good at: being cheap once it works. From our Gumroad comparison: at $1,000 a month in sales, assuming a $25 average order, Gumroad keeps about $105.
- • What forces the upgrade: nothing — there is no plan above it; the fee simply grows with you. See Gumroad alternative.
5. Fourthwall — free to launch, the fee lives inside the product
For creators selling merch who never want to touch a parcel. Free to launch with no listed platform cut, because Fourthwall prints, packs, ships and handles returns and takes its margin inside the product cost. A Pro tier around $19/month adds extras; a custom domain is supported. Whether it beats running your own print-on-demand account depends on your volume and the margin you would set yourself. Checked late August 2026.
- • Good at: merch with no stock, no shipping and no customer-service inbox.
- • Not good at: control over your margin, and anything that is not merch.
- • What forces the upgrade: wanting Pro's extras, or wanting your own margins — SitesPlaced connects your own Qikink or Printify account instead. See Fourthwall alternative.
6. Beacons — free with a 9% cut, the steepest here
A wide creator toolkit — media kit, pitch tools, a link-in-bio page — with a shop attached. The shop is where it gets expensive: 9% of every sale on the free plan, the steepest cut of any platform we compared, with lower rates on paid tiers from about $10/month. A custom domain is on the paid plans. Checked late August 2026.
- • Good at: brand deals; the media-kit tooling has no equivalent on this list.
- • Not good at: selling. From our Beacons comparison: at $500 a month in sales, 9% is $45, three times a SitesPlaced Growth plan that takes nothing.
- • What forces the upgrade: the 9%. See Beacons alternative.
7. Square Online — a real free tier, tied to Square's processing
A genuine free tier, per our June 2026 comparison of free ecommerce builders, tied to Square's own payment processing with per-transaction fees, with Square branding, a limited catalogue on free, and a US focus — cash on delivery and UPI-first selling are not what it is for.
- • Good at: a US business that already takes cards on a Square terminal.
- • Not good at: India, COD, WhatsApp orders, or a store that is not an extension of a till.
- • What forces the upgrade: the branding and the catalogue limit. Check their current plan page for what free includes today.
8. Wix free tier — free to build a site, cannot sell on it
Wix is a general website builder with a store add-on, and its free tier is a real free tier for a website: a site on a wixsite.com address with Wix ads on it. What you do not get is a checkout. Selling needs a paid plan — in India the Core plan at about ₹399/month billed a year upfront, from about $17/month elsewhere — and Wix Payments is not available in India, so you connect a gateway yourself. Wix takes 0% once you are paying. From our 2026 comparisons.
- • Good at: designing a good-looking site, with a huge template library and an app market.
- • Not good at: being a free store. The free tier is a brochure.
- • What forces the upgrade: wanting to sell anything at all. See Wix alternatives.
9. WooCommerce — free software, not a free store
A free, open-source store plugin for WordPress that takes 0% because you connect your own gateway. It is here because people search for it as a free store builder, and it is not one: a working store needs hosting (roughly ₹2,000–₹8,000 a year, or $50–$200, per our June 2026 comparison), a domain (about ₹1,000 a year), and usually paid extensions — shipping extensions alone were listed at $79–$279 a year each. You also become the person who installs updates and fixes the site.
- • Good at: control. If you can code, or pay someone who can, it does anything.
- • Not good at: being free, or simple.
- • What forces the upgrade: there is no free plan to upgrade from; hosting and a domain are day-one costs.
The ones that look free in search results and are not
These turn up for the same searches, and none publishes a store for ₹0 on an ongoing basis. That does not make them bad products; it means they answer a different question.
- Shopify. A short trial, then from about $29/month (about ₹1,994/month for Basic in India), plus 0.5–2% extra on sales through external gateways unless you use Shopify Payments, which is not available in India, per our 2026 comparison. Right for a store that will scale; not free. See Shopify alternatives.
- Squarespace. No free plan; from about $16/month, with commerce on the higher plans.
- Sellfy. No free plan, a 14-day trial, then $29/month billed yearly, with an annual sales cap on each plan and 2% charged above it, as listed in late August 2026.
- Stan Store. $29/month with no free plan; deliberately a single link-in-bio page for coaches.
- Indian builders with a trial, not a free plan (August 2026): WSTORES (from ₹399/month; the 7-day trial needs a UPI AutoPay mandate and bills on day 8), FlexiCommerce (from ₹999/month; the store goes offline after a 14-day trial), StoreMaker (from ₹222/month; a ₹50 trial), StoreBase (₹99/month plus 10% of sales, capped at ₹999/month) and Alippo (free to build, about ₹1,900/month per store to go live, checked 8 September 2026).

India: the free plans that publish a real store
An Indian seller needs three things a global list does not test for: UPI, cash on delivery, and a courier the store can hand an order to. Five builders publish for ₹0 in India, as listed in August 2026. The longer India-only ranking is at best free online store builders in India, and the full eight-builder table in Indian online store builders compared.
- SitesPlaced. Unlimited products, 0% commission, Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree in your own account, COD with an optional charge, WhatsApp checkout, Shiprocket and Shipmozo with tracking, PDF invoices, coupons and 16 templates. Limits: a small badge, 500 MB, the builder's address. Domain from ₹199/month.
- Shopexer. Free forever, unlimited products on a Shopexer sub-address, UPI, cards and wallets listed, shipping included, and merchant apps on Android and iOS — the only iPhone app here. One storefront style; a custom domain is not listed; their pricing page returned a 404 when we checked, so the free plan was the only plan visible.
- StartupInMinutes. Free forever, unlimited products, a 0% platform fee and Razorpay on free, but three images per product, two themes, and shipping held for Pro at ₹999/month — every pickup booked by hand until you pay.
- Shop2Host. Free with a hard cap of 10 products, cash on delivery and their own built-in UPI. Razorpay, Shiprocket, WhatsApp alerts and the domain add-on sit on Pro at ₹690/month (₹586 billed yearly). A ten-product test; past that it is a trial with no clock.
- Dukaan. A free plan with a per-order service fee — about 4.99%, capped at ₹200 per order, on top of your gateway, per our 2026 comparison — and a custom domain on paid tiers listed at roughly ₹1,499–₹14,490/month. The fastest self-serve path to a catalogue and checkout, with generic catalogue themes. See Dukaan alternatives.
Read the fee line, not the headline: “0% platform fee” with shipping on a paid plan, or ₹0 with a service fee on every order, is a different product from ₹0 with 0% and couriers included. More on that one point in zero-commission online store builders in India.
Which one for whom
You sell physical products in India — sarees, jewellery, food, skincare, anything that ships. SitesPlaced: the only free plan here with UPI on your own account, COD, WhatsApp checkout and a courier integration at ₹0.
You sell files abroad and want tax handled — Gumroad or Payhip. The percentage is the honest price of not thinking about VAT; above a few hundred dollars a month, run the numbers against a flat plan.
You are a maker with five products or fewer — Big Cartel is a good home and takes nothing. SitesPlaced does the same with no cap, if a sixth product is coming.
You sell merch and never want to touch a parcel — Fourthwall. To set your own margin instead, SitesPlaced connects your own Qikink or Printify account.
Brand deals are most of your income — Beacons, for the media kit. The shop costs 9%. You need an iPhone app today — Shopexer, in India.
You want built-in traffic and do not mind commission — none of these. That is a marketplace, and a different decision; see selling online without marketplace commissions.
Who should not pick SitesPlaced
- • You want someone else to be the seller of record. On SitesPlaced the money goes to your own account and the tax filing is yours; Gumroad and Payhip do that work for a percentage.
- • You want a marketplace's built-in traffic. A store on your own address has no audience until you bring one from Instagram, WhatsApp, search or ads.
- • You sell outside India and need a feature we have not verified there. Stripe, PayPal and Shippo labels are live; check the integrations page for the rest.
- • You need an iOS merchant app today, a platform that prints and ships merch for you, or a booking tool for coaching calls.
What “free” costs you anyway
Three costs sit outside every free plan: the payment gateway's fee on each online payment, which no builder can make disappear; the courier charge on each parcel; and your time, if shipping is behind a paywall and every order becomes a form. The one cost you can avoid is the builder's own commission. On a store doing ₹50,000 a month — a worked example, not a statistic — a 5% cut is ₹2,500 a month, ₹30,000 a year; 0% is ₹0. That is why this list separates “free to start” from “free to keep running”. The full price ladder is in online store builder pricing in India, and the general traps in hidden costs of free website builders.
Frequently asked questions
Which online store builder is completely free?
As of September 2026, the free plans that publish a live, selling store and take no cut of your sales are SitesPlaced (unlimited products, 0% commission, payments on your own gateway account) and Big Cartel (0% but capped at five products). Payhip, Gumroad and Beacons are free to start but take 5%, 10% plus 50 cents, and 9% of every sale. Wix's free tier cannot sell. Payment-gateway fees apply everywhere and go to the gateway.
Can I take payments on a free online store builder?
On some, yes. SitesPlaced takes UPI, cards and net banking through your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account on the free plan, plus cash on delivery and WhatsApp checkout; outside India you connect your own Stripe or PayPal. Payhip, Gumroad, Beacons and Big Cartel take payments on free too, with the fee differences described in this post. Wix's free tier has no checkout, and Square Online's runs on Square's own processing.
Do free store builders charge commission?
Many do, and it is the most important line to read. Gumroad takes 10% plus 50 cents, Beacons 9%, Payhip 5%, and Dukaan's free plan carries a per-order service fee of about 4.99% capped at ₹200, per our 2026 comparisons. SitesPlaced, Big Cartel and StartupInMinutes list 0%. This is separate from the payment gateway's fee, which every online payment carries and which goes to the gateway, not the builder.
Can I use my own domain on a free store plan?
Almost never. A free store lives on the builder's address — on SitesPlaced that is yourname.sitesplaced.site. Connecting yourbrand.com is what paid plans are for: on SitesPlaced it starts at ₹199/month ($7.99 outside India) on Starter, which also removes the badge and makes store pages answer about 4× faster. Big Cartel, Gumroad and Fourthwall list custom-domain support; Payhip and Beacons put it on paid plans. Check each builder's current plan page.
What is the catch with free online store builders?
One of five things: a product cap (Big Cartel's five, Shop2Host's ten), a cut of every sale (Gumroad, Beacons, Payhip, Dukaan's service fee), a store that cannot check out (Wix free), a trial dressed as a free plan (Shopify, Sellfy, WSTORES, FlexiCommerce), or a badge on your store. On SitesPlaced the catch is stated plainly: a small badge, 500 MB of storage and the builder's address until you pay ₹199/month for Starter.
Is Shopify free?
No. Shopify has a short trial and then paid plans from about $29/month (about ₹1,994/month for Basic in India), with an extra 0.5–2% on sales through external gateways unless you use Shopify Payments, which is not available in India, per our 2026 comparison. It is a strong platform for a store that will scale, but it is not a free store builder. Prices change; check their pricing page.
Which free online store builder is best in India?
SitesPlaced. The free plan publishes a real store with unlimited products, 0% commission, UPI and cards through your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account, cash on delivery with an optional COD charge, WhatsApp checkout, Shiprocket and Shipmozo couriers, PDF invoices and all 16 store templates. Shopexer, StartupInMinutes and Shop2Host also publish for ₹0 with tighter limits; Dukaan's free plan carries a per-order service fee.
What forces an upgrade on SitesPlaced?
Four things, none of them selling: your own domain, the badge removed, storage past 500 MB, or store pages that answer about 4× faster than on the free plan. That is Starter at ₹199/month or ₹1,990/year. Products, orders, payments, COD, WhatsApp checkout, coupons, invoices and couriers stay free at 0% commission. Code FREE7 gives 7 days free on Starter or Growth when you set up autopay; cancel before the first charge and pay nothing.
Verdict
For anyone selling in India, SitesPlaced is the best free online store builder in 2026, and it is not close: the only free plan here that publishes a store with unlimited products, takes UPI and cards into your own account, offers cash on delivery and WhatsApp checkout, hands orders to a courier, and takes 0% of every sale. The catch is a badge, 500 MB and the builder's address, and ₹199/month removes all three.
Outside India, decide by what you sell. Files with tax handled: Gumroad or Payhip, priced in percent. A five-product maker's shop: Big Cartel. Merch with no parcels: Fourthwall. A real website with a store, 0% commission and your own Stripe or PayPal: SitesPlaced, after checking the integrations page for your country. Whatever you pick, publish something this week — a free plan you have actually shared teaches you more than any comparison table, this one included.
Publish a free store and see if the orders come
Unlimited products, UPI and cards on your own account, cash on delivery, WhatsApp checkout, couriers, invoices and 16 templates — for ₹0 and 0% commission. Your own domain from ₹199/month, with 7 days free on code FREE7.
