Is Black Friday a thing in India? The honest answer for small sellers

Yes. Black Friday is a thing in India, and has been for several years, but mostly online. Indian marketplaces and brands run Black Friday sales in the last week of November, and the deals are strongest in electronics and accessories, fashion, beauty and home. In 2026 it falls on Friday 27 November, with Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November. Below: who actually shops it, what those buyers expect, the dates, and what a small seller should and should not do about it.

Key takeaway: Black Friday in India is an online bargain weekend, not a festival. Nobody is buying a gift for a deadline; they are waiting for a price they trust to drop. For a small seller that means a short sale on a few products at a real markdown, told to people who already know you, and nothing like the month-long push you made for Diwali.

TL;DR

  • • It exists, it is mostly online, and it has been running in India for several years.
  • • Dates: Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026; Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November 2026.
  • • Who shops: people who already buy online, mainly for electronics and accessories, fashion, beauty and home.
  • • What they expect: a real markdown, a clear end, easy delivery and payment, stock that does not run out.
  • • Do: a few products, one clear offer, Friday to Monday, told to your own buyers.
  • • Don’t: fake the old price, discount everything, run it for weeks, or treat it like Diwali.

Where Black Friday comes from, and how it reached India

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, which falls on the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 that Thursday is 26 November, so Black Friday is Friday 27 November. In the US it started as the day shops opened early with big markdowns to begin Christmas shopping. The Monday after, Cyber Monday, was named later for online deals.

India has no Thanksgiving, so Black Friday did not arrive through shops. It arrived through the internet. Online marketplaces and brands with their own websites began running Black Friday sales here several years ago, and the name stuck because people already knew it from films, YouTube and global brands. That is why, in India, it is overwhelmingly an online event. Walk through a market on 27 November and you will see few signs of it; open a shopping app and you will see little else.

Who shops Black Friday in India

Think of the person who types “Black Friday sale India” into Google, not of everyone who shops. That person is usually one of these:

  • Someone who already buys online and knows the name. They have ordered from marketplaces for years, they saw last year’s banners, and they expect the last week of November to be cheap.
  • A gadget buyer waiting for a drop. They want earphones, a phone case, a charger, a smartwatch band, and they have been putting it off until a sale. Accessories are where a small seller can play; the phones themselves belong to the marketplaces.
  • A fashion or beauty buyer restocking. Winter has started, the Diwali outfits are worn, and a jacket, a pair of boots or a skincare set at a real price is tempting.
  • An early Christmas and New Year gift buyer. Christmas is Friday 25 December 2026; four weeks earlier is exactly when organised gift buyers start.
  • Someone who missed the Diwali window. The thing they meant to order in October never got ordered. A sale is the nudge.

And who is not shopping: the Diwali gift buyer with a list and a deadline (that was three weeks ago), the relative who wants sweets and diyas, and the buyer who has never ordered online in their life. If your store lives on those buyers, Black Friday will be quiet for you, and that is fine. Black Friday vs Diwali sale goes through the two buyers side by side.

What Black Friday buyers expect

These buyers have been trained by marketplaces, so they arrive with expectations. You do not have to match a marketplace, but you do have to know what the buyer is comparing you with.

They expectBecauseWhat it means for your store
A real markdown on a price they knowThey have seen the same thing on a marketplace and remember what it costStrike through the price you actually charged in October, not a raised one
A clear start and a clear endThe whole point of the day is urgencyFriday morning to Monday night, said in the announcement bar and in every message
To see the saving without working for itMarketplaces show the old price crossed outA sale price on the product, or one coupon code with the amount in the name
Free or cheap deliveryMarketplaces bundle it into the priceFree delivery above a cart value, so the bigger cart earns it
Dispatch within a day or twoThey want it before the next weekendPack what you have in stock; say when it ships on the product page
UPI, card or cash on deliveryIt is how they pay everywhere elseKeep all three on; add an extra COD charge if your courier charges you for cash
Stock that does not vanish on Friday afternoonA sold-out sale feels like a trickFewer products, deeper stock; pause ordering if you really run out

What a small seller should do

  1. Check that your products fit. Electronics accessories, fashion, beauty, home and kitchen: yes. Handmade sweets, puja items, personalised gifts: read the next section first. Most stores have a few products that fit even when the whole store does not.
  2. Pick a few products, not the whole store. Five to ten products you have real stock of. A sale on everything teaches buyers that your prices are soft; a sale on a handful reads as a reason.
  3. Make one clear offer with a real markdown. Either a sale price on each product (on SitesPlaced, set Original price higher than the price and the old price shows struck through), or one coupon code such as BLACK20, 20% off, with a minimum order value and a cap on the rupees off. Not both on the same product unless you have checked the coupon’s Sale items rule.
  4. Give it an end, and say the end everywhere. Coupons under Settings → Discounts have an Expires date; set it to Monday 30 November. Put “Black Friday prices until Monday midnight” in the announcement bar under Settings → Branding. There is no countdown timer on SitesPlaced, and you do not need one; a date in a sentence does the job.
  5. Tell the people who already know you. Past buyers who said yes to offers, your Instagram, your WhatsApp status. One message before, one when it starts, one in the last hours. Ready-to-send texts are in Black Friday WhatsApp messages for customers.
  6. Be ready to pack from Friday. Orders land in four days instead of four weeks. Boxes, labels and the courier pickup should be arranged before Friday morning, and if a product sells out, tick Pause ordering or take it off sale rather than taking money for stock you do not have.

What a small seller should not do

  • Do not raise the price to strike it through. Buyers screenshot prices, and the first person who notices will say so in your comments. Strike through the price you actually charged.
  • Do not discount everything. Your best seller sells at full price; discount the things around it. A store-wide 30% is a clearance, and a clearance belongs in January.
  • Do not run it for two weeks. “Black Friday week” and “Black Friday month” are what large brands do to fill a calendar. For a small store a long sale is just a lower price. Friday to Monday is plenty.
  • Do not discount personalised or made-to-order work. The price is your time. A photo frame at 25% off is you working for less in a busy month.
  • Do not sell below landed cost. Landed cost is the product plus the box, the courier and the payment charge. Run the numbers in the discount calculator before you announce anything. Worked example: a product sold at ₹999 with a landed cost of ₹540 leaves ₹459; at 20% off it leaves ₹259, and at 40% off it leaves ₹59. Example figures only.
  • Do not copy the marketplace playbook. Hourly deals, doorbusters and “only 3 left” counters need a team and software. A small store wins on one honest offer, fast dispatch and a reply on WhatsApp within the hour.
  • Do not let it swallow the Diwali clean-up. Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026. In the week after it you are still delivering orders, chasing cash-on-delivery returns and counting stock. Finish that first; what to do after Diwali is the list.

The dates that matter in 2026

DateWhatFor a small seller
Sunday 8 November 2026DiwaliThe big gifting season; most courier orders for it are already placed
Saturday 14 November 2026Children’s DayA small day for toys and kidswear, two weeks before Black Friday
Thursday 26 November 2026US ThanksgivingThe reason the date moves every year; nothing happens in India
Friday 27 November 2026Black FridaySale starts in the morning; most Indian sales run through the weekend
Monday 30 November 2026Cyber MondayThe online follow-on day; a natural last day for your offer
Friday 25 December 2026ChristmasBlack Friday buyers often start their Christmas gifts here

Notice the gap: nineteen days between Diwali and Black Friday. That is enough time to deliver the last Diwali orders, see what is left on the shelf, and decide which of it goes on sale. How to plan a sale calendar shows how to space the whole year so the sales do not run into each other.

Is it worth it for your store? A three-question test

Ask yourself three things. One: do your buyers already shop online for the kind of thing you sell, from marketplaces or other small stores? Two: do you have stock you would rather turn into cash before Christmas than store until next year? Three: can you pack and ship a few days’ worth of orders in one weekend without it breaking you?

Two yeses: run a Black Friday weekend. One yes: send a small thank-you offer to past buyers and leave the store alone. No yeses: skip it with a clear conscience, and put the energy into Christmas, where what sells most at Christmas online is a better use of your month.

Running it on a free SitesPlaced store

Everything a Black Friday weekend needs is on the free plan: sale prices with the old price struck through, coupons with an expiry date, a minimum order and a cap, free delivery above a cart value with a progress bar in the cart, the announcement bar for the end time, pause ordering, and a cart that updates its prices live, so if you change a price on Saturday, open carts see it. Payments go through your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account, plus cash on delivery and WhatsApp checkout, with 0% commission. If you deliver locally, the new Delivery area setting under Settings → Checkout lets you list the pincodes you serve, and if you take UPI payments directly, the order-placed screen shows a QR code with the exact amount filled in.

Buy X Get Y, the slide-out cart with upsells and frequently-bought-together are part of Growth, at ₹499 a month, or ₹499 once for 30 days with no autopay. Starter, at ₹199 a month or ₹199 once for 30 days, gives you your own domain, removes the badge, adds store analytics so you can see what the weekend actually did, and makes your store’s pages answer about 4× faster than on the free plan: about 75 ms instead of about 330 ms, measured on live paid stores on 28 September 2026. “Answer” means how soon the page starts arriving, before the photos load. The code FREE7 gives 7 days free on Starter or Growth when you set up autopay; cancel before the first charge and you pay nothing. The whole weekend, with offers and messages, is laid out on the Black Friday page for sellers.

Frequently asked questions

Is Black Friday celebrated in India?

Not as a festival, but as a sale, yes. India has no Thanksgiving, so there is nothing to celebrate on the Thursday. What India has is the sale on the Friday after it: online marketplaces and brands have run Black Friday offers for several years, and buyers who shop online know the name and wait for it. In shops and markets you will see far less of it.

When is Black Friday 2026 in India?

Friday 27 November 2026, the day after US Thanksgiving on Thursday 26 November. Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November 2026. Most Indian sales start on the Friday and run through the weekend to the Monday, and the date is the same in India as everywhere else because it follows the US calendar.

Is Black Friday in India only online?

Mostly, yes. It came to India through online marketplaces and brands’ own websites, not through shops, so the buyers who look for it are people who already shop online. A small seller with an online store is in the right place for it; a shop with no online presence will mostly see it pass by.

What sells on Black Friday in India?

It is strongest in electronics and accessories, fashion, beauty and home. For a small seller that means phone cases, cables and earphones, winter wear and basics, skincare and make-up sets, bedding, kitchenware and decor. Festive items such as sweets, diyas and puja things belong to Diwali three weeks earlier, not to Black Friday.

Should a small business do a Black Friday sale in India?

If your buyers already shop online for the kind of thing you sell, and you have stock you would rather turn into cash before Christmas, yes, as a short weekend sale on a few products. If you sell handmade or made-to-order things, or festive goods, you can skip it or send a simple thank-you offer to past buyers instead. It should never be a month-long push like Diwali.

What is the difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

Black Friday began in American shops; Cyber Monday was created later for online deals on the Monday after. In India both are online, so for a small seller the practical difference is only the date: Friday 27 November 2026 is when the sale starts and Monday 30 November 2026 is the natural day to end it.

How long should a Black Friday sale last?

Friday to Monday, four days at most. A Black Friday offer that runs for two weeks is just a lower price, and buyers stop hurrying. Set the coupon to expire on Monday 30 November, put the end time in the announcement bar, and take the sale price off the products on Tuesday morning.

Run a Black Friday weekend on a free store

Sale prices, coupons with an expiry and free delivery above a value are free on every SitesPlaced store. Open one, add the products you want to move, and set the offer before Friday 27 November.
