What this discount calculator does

Three offer types in one tool. % off turns an MRP and a percentage into the sale price and the rupee saving. Flat ₹ off does the reverse and also tells you the equivalent percentage, which is what the customer actually perceives. Buy X Get Y handles bundle offers — buy 2 get 1 free, buy 3 get 1 at 50% off — and reports the effective discount on the whole bundle, what the shopper pays, and the effective price per unit. Everything is rupee formatted with Indian grouping.

% off: Sale = MRP × (1 − p ÷ 100) · Savings = MRP × p ÷ 100
Flat off: Sale = MRP − f · Equivalent % = f ÷ MRP × 100
Buy X Get Y at d% off: Effective % = (Y × d) ÷ (X + Y)

How to use it

  1. Pick the offer type

% off, flat ₹ off, or Buy X Get Y.

  2. Enter the numbers

MRP and the discount; for bundles, how many they buy, how many they get, and the discount on the extra units (100% = free). Add a unit price to see rupee amounts.

  3. Compare

Try two versions of the same offer. A 33% bundle that moves three units may beat a 25% straight discount that moves one.

Worked examples

% off

MRP ₹1,200, 25% off. Sale = 1,200 × 0.75 = ₹900. Savings ₹300.

Flat ₹ off

MRP ₹1,200, ₹150 off. Sale = ₹1,050. Equivalent discount = 150 ÷ 1,200 = 12.5%.

Buy 2 Get 1 free

Unit price ₹500, buy 2, get 1 at 100% off.

Bundle = 3 units listed at ₹1,500. Shopper pays 2 × 500 = ₹1,000, saves ₹500. Effective discount = 1 ÷ 3 = 33.33%. Effective price per unit = 1,000 ÷ 3 = ₹333.33.

Same offer but the third unit at 50% off: shopper pays 1,000 + 250 = ₹1,250, effective discount (1 × 50) ÷ 3 = 16.67%, per unit ₹416.67.

'Feels like' is the number shoppers tend to assume when the offer is read quickly — the gap is why bundles convert.

Before you announce a sale

Put the discounted price through the profit margin calculator with your real cost — a 25% discount on a 38.5% margin product leaves 17.9% on the new price, and a 30% discount leaves 12.1%. If the sale is meant to feed ads, the ROAS calculator will show the break-even moving up as the margin shrinks. More ideas for offers that do not wreck margin are in offers and discounts that increase sales.

Frequently asked questions

Is Buy 2 Get 1 free a 50% discount or 33%?

33.33%. The shopper takes three units and pays for two, so the discount on the bundle is 1 ÷ 3. It is often advertised as if it were half price because the free item is compared to one paid item instead of the whole bundle. Buy 1 Get 1 free is the offer that equals 50%.

Is a percentage discount the same as a flat discount?

Only at one price. ₹150 off a ₹1,200 item is 12.5%; the same ₹150 off a ₹600 item is 25%. Percentage offers scale with price and feel bigger on expensive items; flat offers feel bigger on cheap items and cap what you give away.

How do I combine two discounts?

Apply them one after the other, not by adding the percentages. 20% off then a further 10% off is 1 − 0.8 × 0.9 = 28% off, not 30%. Run the first in '% off', then put the result back in as the MRP for the second.

What does a discount do to my margin?

It comes straight out of the margin, and faster than you would guess. A product costing ₹400 and listed at ₹650 (38.5% margin) sold at 25% off — ₹487.50 — is left with a 17.9% margin; at 30% off (₹455) only 12.1%. The exact figure is (discounted price − cost) ÷ discounted price. Check the new price in the profit margin calculator before announcing a sale.

Can I run these offers on my own store?
