How to start a candle business online in India — from cost per candle to Diwali orders
A candle business can start at home with one wax and a few scents. Work out the full cost of each candle before you set a price, test-burn every design, print safety instructions on every candle, pack it so glass and wax survive a courier, plan stock around gifting seasons, and sell sets and bundles from your own store link.
Key takeaway: candles look cheap to make until you count the jar, the box, the wastage, the packing and your time. In our worked example a 180 g soy candle costs about ₹267 all-in, so price from the full cost, not the wax. Candles are bought as gifts, so sets, hampers and festival planning matter as much as scents. A free SitesPlaced store with the Gifts & Lifestyle or Home & Decor template takes UPI, COD and WhatsApp orders at 0% commission, and includes a free build-your-own-hamper page.
TL;DR
- • Start small: one wax, one vessel, three to five scents.
- • Test-burn every wax, wick and jar combination before you sell it.
- • Cost it fully: materials, packing, wastage, time and fees. Worked example below.
- • Label it: safety warnings on every candle; honest claims only.
- • Pack for heat and bumps: lid on, bubble wrap, no empty space.
- • Sell for occasions: Diwali, weddings, housewarmings, corporate gifts. Sets and hampers sell gifts.
1. Choose a small range
Container candles (wax poured into a jar or tin) are the easiest to start with and to ship. Pillar and moulded candles (shapes, bubble cubes, flowers) photograph well but chip and scratch in transit. Tealights and diyas are seasonal, sold in boxes around Diwali. Home fragrance such as wax melts can come later; liquids like reed diffusers need their own leak-proof packing.
Pick one wax (soy, paraffin, beeswax or a blend) and describe it honestly. Only write “100% soy” if it is, and avoid claims you can’t back, such as “non-toxic” or “reduces anxiety”. Three to five scents in one or two jar sizes is a real range. Name the scents in plain words (“Sandalwood & rose”, “Filter coffee”) and describe what they smell like.
2. Test-burn before you sell
A “test burn” means lighting a finished candle and watching it over several sessions. You are checking that the wax melts to the edge instead of tunnelling down the middle, that the flame stays steady and doesn’t smoke, that the jar doesn’t get dangerously hot, and how strong the scent is in a room. Change one thing at a time (wick size, fragrance amount, jar) and write down what happened. Your burn time and burning instructions come from these notes, not from a supplier’s brochure.
3. Cost per candle: a worked example
Here is a 180 g soy candle in a glass jar with a gift box. These are example numbers only, not market prices. Replace every line with your own supplier’s rates.
| Example: one 180 g jar candle | Cost |
|---|---|
| Soy wax, 180 g (at an example ₹350 per kg) | ₹63 |
| Fragrance oil, 14 g, about 8% of the wax (at an example ₹2,500 per kg) | ₹35 |
| Glass jar with lid | ₹45 |
| Wick with metal base, and wick sticker | ₹8 |
| Dye (optional) | ₹2 |
| Front label and safety label | ₹8 |
| Gift box and filler | ₹30 |
| Wastage and test candles (about 10% of the above) | ₹19 |
| Your time (6 minutes at ₹200 an hour) | ₹20 |
| Shipping packing: outer box and bubble wrap | ₹25 |
| Payment fee on a ₹599 sale (example 2%) | ₹12 |
| Total cost per candle | ₹267 |
At ₹599, this candle leaves about ₹332 before delivery, photos, samples and marketing. Two things stand out. First, the wax is less than a quarter of the cost; the jar, box and packing together cost more. Second, the shipping packing is per parcel, so a set of three candles in one box costs less per candle to pack and send than three separate orders. That is the case for sets.
If you plan to supply shops or take corporate orders at a lower price, check that the lower price still covers the full cost. The product pricing calculator and profit margin calculator do the sums, and how to price your products explains margins.
4. Safety labels and paperwork
A candle is an open flame in someone’s home. Put a safety label on the bottom or back of every candle. Common warnings include:
- • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- • Keep away from children, pets, curtains and anything that can catch fire.
- • Burn on a heat-resistant surface, away from draughts.
- • Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each lighting.
- • Don’t burn for longer than the limit you print (set it from your test burns).
- • Don’t move the candle while it is lit or the wax is liquid. The jar gets hot.
- • Stop using it when about 1 cm of wax is left at the bottom.
Ask your fragrance oil supplier for the safe amount to use in candles and for the safety data sheet. Some suppliers also share an IFRA certificate, the fragrance industry’s safety standard, which lists safe levels by product type.
On paperwork (general information, not legal advice): selling candles you make generally doesn’t need a special trade licence. GST depends on your yearly sales and on whether you ship to other states; see do you need GST to sell online in India. Packed goods sold to consumers generally need certain details on the pack under India’s Legal Metrology rules, such as your name and address, the net weight, the MRP and the month of packing. Confirm both with a CA.
5. Packing and shipping
- Lid on, then bubble wrap around each jar, then a box with padding on every side. Shake it; nothing should move.
- Dividers in sets, so jars don’t knock against each other.
- Tins or glass? Tins are lighter and don’t break; glass looks premium but needs more packing and costs more to ship.
- Heat: parcels can sit in hot vans. Use a wax and fragrance you have tested in heat, and avoid sending parcels that will sit in transit over a weekend.
- Inside the box: a card with burning instructions, your store link, and a note inviting a photo if anything arrives damaged.

6. Gifting season: plan months ahead
Candles are bought as gifts, so your busy weeks follow the gifting calendar: Diwali, Christmas and New Year, Valentine’s Day, Rakhi, Mother’s Day, housewarmings, weddings (return favours) and corporate Diwali gifts. What to do before each one:
- Order materials early. Jars and popular fragrances can run short close to festivals.
- Launch a festive collection a few weeks ahead: one or two festival scents, a gift set, a tealight box.
- Post a delivery cut-off in the announcement bar, for example “Order by 25 October for Diwali delivery”.
- Pause ordering when you reach what you can make. Your products stay visible with your own message, and new orders stop.
- Pitch corporate orders early, weeks before the festival, while offices are still choosing gifts. A “Price on request” product on the Gifts & Lifestyle or Home & Decor template opens WhatsApp with the product named, for bulk enquiries.
7. Bundles, hampers and personalised candles
- Sets as their own products: “Trio of votives”, “Diwali tealight box of 12”. Free, and cheaper for you to ship.
- Build-your-own hamper: a free page where buyers pick candles and other products and you pack them into one hamper, with an optional photo and note from the buyer. Switch it on in Settings → Sales boosters.
- Paid extras: “Gift wrap +₹50”, “Handwritten card +₹30”, ticked in the cart.
- Personalised labels: a text note on the product (“Name for the label”), or a photo upload for photo labels. The Gifts & Lifestyle Store previews the buyer’s photo on the product.
- Offers: coupon codes and the free-shipping bar are free. Buy X Get Y offers (“Buy 2, get 1 free”) are on the Growth plan.
8. First orders from Instagram and WhatsApp
- Film the pour and the first light. A flickering flame in a dark room is a natural reel. Put the price in the caption and the store link in your bio.
- Describe the smell in words people know: “like a temple in the morning”, “fresh filter coffee”. Nobody can smell a photo.
- Share every new scent on your WhatsApp status and in a broadcast to friends and past buyers.
- Do a pop-up before Diwali with a printed QR code to your store. See how to get your first 10 orders.
9. Set up your free candle store
- Pick a template. The Gifts & Lifestyle Store suits a gifting-led brand: big category photos, shop by occasion, and the personalised photo preview. The Home & Decor Store suits a décor-led brand: a calm grid, a photo mosaic of your categories, and each design shown as a photo on the product page. Changing template later means making a new store. For more layouts, see the best home decor templates and the best gift shop templates.
- Add products with scents or colours as options, and in the description: wax, weight, burn time from your tests, scent notes and jar size. Add a short video of the lit candle.
- Set checkout: your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account for UPI and cards; COD with an optional charge; WhatsApp checkout.
- Set delivery: a flat charge and free delivery above an amount that nudges buyers to a set.
- Write a clear policy: no returns on used candles; replacements for breakage with photos. Start from the return policy generator.
- Publish on yourcandles.sitesplaced.site and share it.
10. When to upgrade
Stay free until orders are steady; the free plan has no product or order limit. Before your first big festive season, Starter (₹199/month, or ₹1,990/year) adds your own domain such as yourcandles.com, removes the SitesPlaced badge, adds store analytics, and makes your store’s pages answer about 4× faster than on the free plan. In our measurements on live paid stores on 28 September 2026, a page answered in about 75 ms instead of about 330 ms; “answer” means how quickly the page starts arriving, before the photos load, not the full page load, and your edits still show at once. Growth (₹499/month) adds Buy X Get Y offers, reviews with Google star ratings and the other sales boosters. The code FREE7 gives 7 days free on either when you set up autopay; cancel before the first charge and you pay nothing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I price a candle?
Add up wax, fragrance, jar, wick, labels, gift box, wastage, your time, shipping packing and the payment fee to get the full cost per candle, then add your margin. In our worked example a 180 g soy candle in a glass jar costs about ₹267 all-in, so ₹599 leaves about ₹332 before delivery and marketing. Your supplier prices will differ.
Do I need a licence to sell candles in India?
Selling candles you make generally doesn’t need a special trade licence. GST depends on your yearly sales and whether you ship to other states, and packed goods sold to consumers generally need certain details on the pack under the Legal Metrology rules, such as your name and address, net weight and MRP. Confirm your case with a CA.
What should a candle warning label say?
Common warnings are: never leave a burning candle unattended; keep it away from children, pets and anything that can catch fire; burn it on a heat-resistant surface away from draughts; trim the wick before each lighting; don’t move it while lit or while the wax is liquid; and stop when a little wax is left at the bottom. Add a burn-time limit based on your own test burns.
How do I ship candles without them breaking or melting?
Keep the lid on, wrap each jar in bubble wrap, and pack it in a box with padding on every side so nothing moves. Use dividers in multi-candle sets. In hot months, parcels can sit in warm vans, so choose a wax and fragrance you have tested in heat and avoid leaving parcels in transit over a weekend.
When do candles sell the most?
Candles are a gifting product, so plan around gifting dates: Diwali, Christmas and New Year, Valentine’s Day, Rakhi, Mother’s Day, housewarmings, weddings and corporate Diwali gifts. Order materials early, announce a festive collection with a delivery cut-off date, and pause orders when you reach what you can make.
Which free template suits a candle store?
The Gifts & Lifestyle Store suits a gifting-led candle brand: big category photos and shop by occasion. The Home & Decor Store suits a décor-led brand: a calm grid and a photo mosaic of your categories. Both are free, like all 16 SitesPlaced store templates.
