How to get your first 10 orders without spending on ads.
A new store with no orders has a problem that money can't fix quickly: nobody has proof it works. Ads to a store with zero reviews and no sales history convert badly and cost a fortune. The first ten orders are a different job — they come from people who already trust you, and their purpose is to produce the proof (reviews, photos, a delivery record) that makes the eleventh order possible from a stranger. Here is the two-week version.
Week 1, day 1: the warm list
Write down fifty names. Not "followers" — people: the cousin who asked about your earrings, the colleague who bought a jar of pickle from your mother, the three people who DMed "price?" last month and vanished, your WhatsApp groups. Fifty is not hard; most sellers stop at thirty and then remember twenty more.
Message them one at a time, personally, with the store link and one sentence about why you're telling *them*. "You asked about the mustard set in June — it's finally on the store, and I'd love your honest feedback: [link]". Not a broadcast. Broadcasts get ignored; a message that mentions June gets a reply.
The launch offer that isn't a discount
A launch discount trains your first buyers to wait for the next one. Offer something that costs you less and reads as generous: free shipping for the first 20 orders, a small extra in the parcel (a second pair of earrings, a sample jar), or early access to a small batch. Say the number — "first 20" — and mean it. A store that says "limited" and never ends the offer teaches buyers not to believe it.
If you must discount, make it a coupon with a name and an end date (LAUNCH15, ends Sunday) and stop it on Sunday. On SitesPlaced coupons and Buy-X-Get-Y offers are on the free plan under Settings → Discounts.
The WhatsApp status routine
For most Indian sellers, WhatsApp status is the highest-converting channel they own and the one they use least. For two weeks, post once a day: a product photo with the price and the store link, a packing video, a screenshot of a review (with permission), a "3 left" for something that is actually running out. Status is seen by the people who already have your number — the exact people who will place the first orders.
- Morning post: one product, price, link. Evening post: something human — packing, a delivery photo, a thank-you.
- Put the store link in your WhatsApp Business profile and in the catalogue's description.
- Reply to every status view that turns into a DM with the product page link, not a price. The link has the Buy button.
Instagram: pin, don't post more
You don't need more content; you need the content you have to point somewhere. Put the store link in the bio with a line that says what it is ("Order online · COD available"). Pin three posts: your best product, a review or customer photo, and a "how to order" reel that shows the store on a phone. Reply to every comment and DM with the product page link. Old posts with the most saves are the ones to re-share to your story with the link sticker.
Make the first ten deliveries perfect — then ask
The first ten orders are not revenue; they are your review base. Pack them better than you will ever pack again, add a handwritten note, ship the same day, and message the tracking link yourself. When the parcel arrives, mark the order delivered so the review email goes out, or send the review link on WhatsApp the next day. Ten deliveries handled this way produce six to eight verified reviews, and those reviews are what convert the strangers who arrive in month two.
The mechanics — turning reviews on, the WhatsApp link, approving — are in how to collect product reviews.
What to measure in the first two weeks
| Number | Where | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Messages sent → store visits | Your count vs the store's visit count | Whether the message works. Under 30% means the message, not the store, needs fixing. |
| Visits → orders | Orders ÷ visits | Whether the store works. Under 2% on warm traffic usually means price, shipping charge shown late, or a missing COD option. |
| Orders → reviews | Reviews tab | Whether you're asking at delivery. Aim for 6 in 10. |
| Which product sells | Orders by product | What to lead with in every post for the next month. |
Store visits and sources are in the Analytics tab on the Ecommerce plan (free for 14 days on every new account); the order and review counts are on the free plan.
What not to do in the first two weeks
- Don't run ads. A store with no reviews and no purchase history is the most expensive possible thing to advertise. Ads come after the first twenty reviews.
- Don't add more products. Ten good ones. Breadth comes after you know what sells.
- Don't redesign. Nobody left because of the font. They left because the shipping charge appeared at the last step.
- Don't broadcast. One personal message beats fifty forwarded ones.
FAQs
How long does it take to get the first order on a new online store?
With a warm list and personal messages, usually within the first three days. Without one — waiting for search or ads — it can take months. The first orders are a relationships job, not a marketing job.
Should I offer a launch discount?
Prefer free shipping for a fixed number of orders or a small extra in the parcel; both cost less and don't teach buyers to wait for discounts. If you discount, use a named coupon with a real end date.
Should I run Instagram ads for a new store?
Not yet. Ads to a store with no reviews or sales history convert poorly. Get the first ten to twenty orders and reviews from people who know you, then test a small ad budget with Meta Pixel and Conversions API tracking on.
Where do most first orders come from?
WhatsApp status and personal messages, then Instagram DMs and comments. Search and ads come later.
How do I turn first orders into reviews?
Mark each order delivered when it arrives (the review email goes out automatically on SitesPlaced) or send the review link from the order on WhatsApp the next day. Six to eight reviews from ten orders is a normal result if you ask at the right moment.
