Does website speed affect sales? Yes, mostly on the first page

It matters most at one moment: the first page a new buyer sees after tapping your link. Someone who tapped an Instagram ad or a WhatsApp forward hasn’t decided anything yet. They are curious, on mobile data, and one swipe from going back to what they were doing. A blank screen gives them the reason to leave.

Speed matters most for the buyer who doesn’t know you yet. A new visitor from an ad or a link will leave a blank screen long before a loyal customer would. Keep the first page light (a few clean photos, no video at the top) so it shows quickly on mobile data, and make sure it answers quickly. On SitesPlaced, every paid plan (Starter and up) keeps store pages ready close to shoppers: we measured about 75 ms to answer, against about 330 ms on the free plan.

TL;DR

  • • A slow first page mostly loses new, undecided buyers: the ones you paid for with an ad or earned with a post.
  • • Answer time is how long before the page starts arriving; the full load includes every photo. Shoppers see a blank screen during the first and grey boxes during the second.
  • • Fast enough means a product photo and a price are on screen before a new visitor wonders whether the link worked.
  • • We won’t quote outside studies. Test it yourself: on mobile data, from your Instagram bio link.
  • • Our own number: paid SitesPlaced store pages answer in about 75 ms instead of about 330 ms (middle of our 28 September 2026 measurements).

Picture the buyer who taps your link

Someone is scrolling Instagram on a bus in the evening. Your reel catches their eye, and they tap the link. Instagram opens it inside its own browser, on whatever signal the bus has at that moment.

Then nothing happens for a moment. A white screen, a thin bar creeping across the top. They haven’t seen your product yet, so they have no reason to wait: no price they liked, no photo they want to see again. The back arrow is right there, and so is the next reel. Every second of blank screen is a second for their attention to drift back to the feed.

Now compare a customer who has bought from you twice and typed your address in on purpose. They will wait, because they know what’s coming. Speed matters much less to them, and they are the buyers you didn’t have to pay to reach.

WhatsApp works the same way. A link you broadcast to your contacts, or one a happy customer forwards to a friend, lands in the middle of other chats. The person who taps it is being curious or polite. They are not committed yet.

Why the first page matters more than the rest

The first page is where you have already spent something. For an ad, you paid for the tap whether or not the page showed. For a story or a WhatsApp broadcast, you spent your audience’s attention. If the page doesn’t show before the person gives up, you paid and got nothing back, not even a look at the product.

Pages after the first are different. By the time someone opens a second product or the cart, they have chosen to stay. A short wait there is annoying, not fatal. So the most useful speed work on a small store is on the pages you link to: your home page, and the product and category pages you use in ads and stories.

If you run ads, work out what one tap costs you and how many taps become an order. Our Instagram ads ROAS calculator does the sums. A page that loses people before it shows is a hidden cost inside that number, and your first Instagram ad should always point at a page you have tested on mobile data.

Answering vs loading, in plain words

When a phone asks for a page, two things happen. First the server answers: it starts sending the page back. Until then, the shopper sees nothing. Then the phone reads the page and downloads everything it names, such as photos, fonts, video and widgets. That is the load. Web tools call the first part “time to first byte”; we call it the answer, because that is what it is.

StageWhat the shopper seesWhat decides itWho can change it

2. The first screen showsYour name, the first photo, a priceThe size of the first photo, any video at the top, fontsMostly you, and your template
3. Everything has loadedPhotos further down, widgets, trackingHow many photos, add-ons and tags the page carriesYou

A new buyer decides to stay or go mostly during stages 1 and 2. Stage 3 happens while they scroll, and they forgive it if they are already interested. Stage 1 is also the one everything else waits behind: the phone can’t start fetching your photos until the page has answered and said which photos it needs.

Why your own test on Wi-Fi fools you

When you check your own store, you are probably on home or office Wi-Fi, and your phone may have kept your store’s files from your last visit. A new buyer has neither. They are on mobile data, sometimes a weak signal in a moving train or a crowded market, and it is their first visit, so every file is downloaded fresh.

Test like them: Wi-Fi off, open your Instagram bio link, then the product page you actually advertise. If you notice the blank screen, so will they. Our guide to why an online store is slow walks through the check step by step, with the usual causes and the free fixes.

What “fast enough” means in practice

There is no magic number of seconds we can point you to with evidence behind it, and we won’t invent one. You can judge it with four questions, asked on mobile data:

  1. Does something useful appear before you catch yourself wondering whether the link worked?
  2. Is there a product photo and a price on the first screen, without scrolling?
  3. Can you tap Add to cart without the page jumping or ignoring the tap?
  4. Is the product page you advertise as quick as your home page?

If all four answers are yes, speed probably isn’t what’s costing you orders. Look at price, delivery charges, cash on delivery and returns instead: the usual reasons in why your online store is not getting sales. If any answer is no, fix that page before you spend more on ads.

What slows the first page, and who can fix it

  • • Photos and video: you can fix these today, free. Crop tight, one clear photo first, no video at the top.
  • • Add-ons and tracking tags: remove the ones you never look at.
  • • Too many products on the page you link to: link to a category or a single product instead.
  • • A slow answer from the server: this depends on your platform and plan, not on your editing.

The first three are covered in the slow-store guide. The last is the one sellers can’t see or fix themselves, so here is what we measured.

Our own number: 75 ms vs 330 ms

On 28 September 2026 we measured how quickly store pages answer on four live paid SitesPlaced stores, ten pages each. A page kept ready close to shoppers answered in about 75 ms. A page built fresh when it was asked for took about 330 ms. Those are the middle values of all the measurements. Store by store, the gap ranged from 2.3× to 5.5×.

In plain terms, a millisecond (ms) is a thousandth of a second. 330 ms is about a third of a second; 75 ms is under a tenth. On its own, a third of a second is not what loses a buyer. But it is the first wait in the chain, the one every other step waits behind, and the only one you can’t shorten by editing your store. Taking most of it out leaves the rest of the wait down to the shopper’s connection and the weight of your page, and you can do something about the weight.

That is what Starter and every plan above it do. Each store page is kept ready close to your shoppers, so it answers about 4× faster than on the free plan. Every edit, price change or stock change clears the ready copy, so shoppers still see changes at once, and cart, account and order-tracking pages are never kept. There is nothing to switch on. We won’t tell you it adds a percentage to your sales, because nobody can promise that honestly. It removes a wait you couldn’t otherwise remove. The details are in our announcement.

Should you upgrade just for speed?

If most of your orders come from people who already know you, such as repeat buyers or a WhatsApp group of regulars, speed is a small part of the picture and the free plan will serve you well.

If you are paying for ads, or most of your visitors are new people tapping a link from a reel, a story or a forward, the first page is where your money goes, and a faster answer is worth having. Starter is ₹199/month (₹1,990/year). It also gives you your own domain, removes the SitesPlaced badge, and adds store analytics, so you can see where visitors come from and which products they look at. Code FREE7 gives 7 days free when you set up autopay; cancel before the first charge and you pay nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Does website speed really affect sales?

Mostly for new buyers, on the first page. Someone who tapped an ad or a WhatsApp link hasn't decided anything yet, and a blank screen gives them a reason to go back to the feed. A loyal customer who comes looking for you will usually wait.

What is the difference between answer time and page load time?

Answer time is how long until the server starts sending the page back: the blank-screen part. Load time also includes every photo, font, video and widget the page asks for. A page can answer quickly and still load slowly if its photos are heavy.

How fast should my online store be?

Fast enough that something useful, a product photo and a price, appears on mobile data before a new visitor wonders whether the link worked. Test it from your Instagram bio link with Wi-Fi off. If you notice the wait, so will they.

Is my ad money wasted if my page is slow?

Partly. You pay for the tap whether or not the page shows, so every person who gives up on a blank screen is a tap you paid for and got nothing from. Fix the page you advertise before you raise the budget.

How much faster is a paid SitesPlaced store?

On Starter and up, store pages answer about 4× faster than on the free plan. On 28 September 2026 we measured about 75 ms instead of about 330 ms: the middle of four live paid stores, ten pages each, with 2.3× to 5.5× by store. This is the answer time, not the full page load.

Will a faster store fix a store that isn't selling?

Only if speed was the problem. If your store shows quickly on mobile data and still isn't selling, look at price, delivery charges, cash on delivery and returns first.
