Your first Instagram ad for your store, done so you can tell whether it worked.
Most sellers' first ad is the blue Boost button under a post, optimised for 'profile visits', with ₹500 and hope. A week later they have 300 profile visits, no idea how many bought, and a conclusion that 'ads don't work'. Ads work when Meta can see the purchase and optimise toward it. That takes one piece of setup before the first rupee is spent. Here's the whole first campaign, at ₹300 a day.
Before the first rupee: let Meta see the purchase
Meta's ad system is a learning machine: it shows your ad to the people most like the ones who bought. It can only do that if it *knows* who bought — which means a Meta Pixel on your store and, because iOS and ad blockers hide a third of browser events, the Conversions API sending the Purchase from your server. Without them you are paying for clicks and guessing.
- Get your Pixel ID and a Conversions API token. Meta Events Manager → your dataset → Settings. The numeric Pixel ID and a generated access token.
- Paste them into the store. On SitesPlaced: Settings → Tracking & code → Meta Pixel & Conversions API. The Pixel loads on every page and the Purchase is sent server-side from the order, deduplicated with the browser event.
- Place a test order and check Events Manager. You should see PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart and a Purchase from both browser and server, matched by event ID.
This is on the ₹499/month Ecommerce plan — and free for 14 days on every new account, which is exactly long enough to run this first campaign properly. The why is in Meta Conversions API for small online stores.
Don't boost. Use Ads Manager, sales objective
The Boost button optimises for engagement or profile visits, which is not what you want. In Ads Manager create a campaign with the Sales objective, conversion location Website, event Purchase. Meta will warn that the pixel has little data; that's fine — you're feeding it.
The first campaign: one product, one reel, ₹300 a day
- Product: your best seller with the most reviews. Not the new one.
- Creative: the reel that already performed organically. 9:16, the product in use in the first two seconds, price on screen, "COD available" in the caption.
- Audience: Advantage+ (broad), India, 18–45, and let Meta find them. Interest targeting on a ₹300 budget just narrows the learning.
- Placements: Instagram Reels and Feed; leave Advantage+ placements on.
- Landing page: the product page, not the home page and not your profile.
- Budget: ₹300/day for 7 days. Don't touch it for 5 days — every edit resets learning.
Reading the results after a week
| Number | Where | Good for a first campaign |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per purchase (CPP) | Ads Manager, Purchase column | Below your margin per order. If you make ₹300 on a ₹899 kurta, a ₹200 CPP is a win. |
| Link CTR | Ads Manager | Above 1% means the creative works; below 0.7% means change the reel. |
| Add to cart → purchase | Events Manager / store analytics | Above 20%. Lower means the checkout, price or shipping charge is the problem, not the ad. |
With Pixel + Conversions API on, the Purchase column is real orders, deduplicated. Without it the column is mostly empty and the campaign can't learn.
Three outcomes. CPP below margin: raise the budget 20% every 3 days and watch CPP. Clicks but no purchases: the store page is the problem — check price, shipping shown early, COD, reviews. No clicks: the creative is the problem — try a different reel, same everything else.
What to have ready before the campaign starts
- At least five verified reviews on the product you're advertising. Cold traffic reads them first — how to collect product reviews.
- Shipping charge and delivery time on the product page.
- COD on, with confirmation for high-value orders — ad traffic has a higher RTO rate than warm traffic.
- Stock. Nothing wastes ad money like selling out on day two and letting the ad run.
- Your own domain, so the ad's link doesn't advertise a platform.
Common first-campaign mistakes
- Boosting for profile visits and calling it an ad test.
- Sending traffic to the home page. The ad promised a product; land on it.
- Editing daily. Every change restarts the learning phase.
- Running without the Pixel and concluding from likes.
- Advertising a product with no reviews — cold traffic doesn't buy from a page with no proof.
- Judging on day two. A ₹300/day campaign needs 5–7 days to say anything.
FAQs
How much should a small store spend on its first Instagram ad?
₹300 a day for 7 days is enough to learn whether the creative and the page work — about ₹2,000. Don't scale until cost per purchase is below your margin per order.
Boost post or Ads Manager?
Ads Manager with the Sales objective and the Purchase event. Boost optimises for engagement or profile visits, which don't tell you whether anyone bought.
Do I need the Meta Pixel to run ads?
You can run ads without it; you can't judge or optimise them without it. Pixel plus Conversions API lets Meta see real purchases and find buyers like them. On SitesPlaced it's on the Ecommerce plan, free for 14 days on new accounts.
Which product should I advertise first?
The best seller with the most reviews and a reel that already performed organically. New products with no proof convert cold traffic poorly.
How long before I know if the ad works?
Five to seven days at ₹300/day. Judge on cost per purchase against your margin, link CTR for the creative, and add-to-cart-to-purchase for the store page.
Track the sale before you pay for the click.
Native Meta Pixel + Conversions API, your own domain, analytics and reviews on the Ecommerce plan — free for 14 days on every new account. The store itself is free.
