How to get repeat customers for your online store
Customers come back for three reasons: the first order went well, they remember who you are, and they have a reason to order again. You can build all three with WhatsApp, a little discipline and a few store settings, and most of it is free. Here is the plan, in order.
Your cheapest next order is from someone who has already bought. Make the first delivery good, message the buyer on WhatsApp after it arrives, follow up once when they are likely to need you again, and send past buyers a private code instead of discounting to everyone. On SitesPlaced the WhatsApp button on each order, private coupon codes and newsletter sign-ups are free. Product reviews, loyalty stamp cards and scratch cards, and WhatsApp order confirmations from your own business number are on the Growth plan (₹499/month).
TL;DR
- • Start with the first order. On time, well packed, easy to return. No discount makes up for a bad first delivery.
- • Thank, then follow up once. A WhatsApp message after delivery, and one more when they are likely to need you again.
- • Ask for a review a few days after delivery, and never fake one.
- • Give them a card to fill. A stamp card turns “maybe” into “I’m nearly there”.
- • Give them a reason to return: new products on a rhythm, festival collections, reminders for things that run out, a private code.
- • Keep a list you own. Phone numbers and emails from orders and sign-ups, not just Instagram followers.
Why repeat customers are worth the effort
A new buyer costs you something to find: ad money, hours making reels, a first-order discount. A second order from someone who already trusts you costs almost nothing. Here is a worked example with round numbers. Yours will differ.
| Example | First order | Second order |
|---|---|---|
| Order value | ₹800 | ₹800 |
| Your profit before marketing | ₹250 | ₹250 |
| What it cost to get the order | ₹300 in ads | ₹0 (one WhatsApp message) |
| What you keep | −₹50 | ₹250 |
In this example the first order loses money and the second one pays for it. That is how a store that only chases new buyers can be busy and still short of money. Every step below is about getting that second order.
1. Make the first order the reason they come back
- • Ship when you said you would. If you promise dispatch in 24 hours, keep it. If you can’t, message before they have to ask.
- • Pack it properly. Opening the parcel is the only time they hold your brand in their hands.
- • Put a small card in the parcel: thank you, how to reorder, and a QR code that opens a chat with you. Our free WhatsApp QR code generator makes one.
- • Make returns painless. A buyer who had one easy return trusts you with the next order. One who had to argue won’t be back.
None of the tools below will rescue a first order that arrived late, broken or wrong.
2. Say thank you on WhatsApp, then follow up once
WhatsApp is where your buyers already are, and a message from a real person reads very differently from an automated email. Three messages cover most stores:
After dispatch: “Hi, your order from [your store] is on its way. Tracking: [link]. Message here if anything looks wrong.”
After delivery: “Hope you like it! If the size or colour isn’t right, reply here and we’ll sort it out.”
One follow-up, when they are likely to need you again: for a face serum, around when a bottle runs out; for clothing, when your next collection lands; for gifting, a week before the next festival.
Send one follow-up, not a stream. People who feel chased stop reading, then block or report the number. If someone says no thanks, stop.
On SitesPlaced every order has a WhatsApp button that opens a chat with the buyer, free on every plan, and checkout asks for a phone number by default, so nearly every order has one. On the Growth plan you can also connect the WhatsApp Business API, so the order confirmation reaches the buyer automatically from your own business number. How that works is in WhatsApp order notifications for online stores.
3. Ask for a review, and use it
A review does two jobs. It helps the next stranger decide, and it makes the buyer who wrote it feel part of your brand. Ask a few days after delivery, once they have actually used the product.
On SitesPlaced, product reviews are on the Growth plan. When an order is marked delivered, the buyer gets a “How was your order?” email with a button to rate each product. For buyers who ordered without an email, you copy a review link from the order and send it on WhatsApp. Every review waits for your approval before it shows, carries a Verified purchase badge, and approved ratings can appear as stars in Google results. Moving from Shopify or WooCommerce? The Judge.me import brings your old reviews with you. The full how-to is in how to collect product reviews.
Never write fake reviews or pay for them. Buyers can tell, and it costs you the trust you are trying to build.
4. Give them a card to fill
A stamp card is one of the oldest repeat-customer ideas there is: buy six, get the seventh free. It works because a half-full card is a reason to choose you next time instead of someone else.
SitesPlaced’s loyalty programme (Growth plan) gives every customer a digital stamp card tied to their phone number, with no app to install and no OTP. Shops with a counter put a QR code by the till; customers scan it and a stamp lands on the card on their phone. Paid online orders can add stamps to the same card, so a customer who orders online on Tuesday and walks in on Saturday fills one card. When it fills, they get the reward you named, with a code that also works at checkout on your store. Optional scratch cards add a surprise prize after a stamp, with odds and an expiry you set, and one programme can run across several branches.
We have written separately about how to design a stamp card customers actually use and how the loyalty apps for small shops compare, so we won’t repeat that here. If you run a café, salon or bakery, the page for local shops shows the whole setup.
5. Give them a reason to come back
- • New things on a rhythm. A small drop every second Friday, or a monthly restock of bestsellers, gives past buyers something to look at. Announce it on WhatsApp and Instagram on the same day.
- • Seasons and festivals. Diwali, Rakhi, Eid, the wedding season, back to school. Plan a small collection and tell past buyers first.
- • Things that run out. If you sell something people use up, such as tea, skincare or pet food, a reminder around when it is likely to run out can be the most useful message you send.
- • A private code for past buyers. Coupon codes on SitesPlaced are free on every plan and stay private unless you choose to show them on the store, so you can send a “thanks for coming back” code only to people who have bought. A minimum order on the code (say ₹100 off above ₹999) keeps it from eating your margin.
What to avoid: discounting everything, all the time. Buyers learn to wait for the sale, and you teach your best customers to pay less. If you want past buyers to spend a bit more when they return, see how to increase average order value.
6. Keep a list you own
Instagram followers belong to Instagram. If your account is hacked or your reach drops, you can’t get them back. The phone numbers and emails of people who bought from you, or asked to hear from you, are yours.
- • SitesPlaced checkout asks for a phone number by default, so your Orders tab is already a list of past buyers you can reach.
- • Some store templates include a newsletter sign-up section. Sign-ups land in the Subscribers tab of your dashboard, where you can search them and export them as a CSV file, free on every plan.
- • On the Growth plan, the welcome popup can ask a first-time visitor for their email before it shows a coupon code.
- • Sending broadcasts and cart reminders from inside SitesPlaced is part of the AI Co-founder plan (₹1,499/month). On other plans, you send from your own WhatsApp or email.
Only send offers to people who agreed to hear from you, and make it easy to say stop.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get customers to buy again from my online store?
Make the first order go well, say thank you on WhatsApp after delivery, follow up once when they are likely to need you again, ask for a review, and give them a reason to return: new products on a rhythm, a stamp card, or a private code for past buyers. Keep their contact details somewhere you own.
How soon should I follow up after an order?
Send a thank-you when the order is delivered, then one follow-up when the buyer is likely to need you again. For something that runs out, that is around when it would run out; for clothing or gifts, when your next collection or the next festival comes round.
Is it okay to message customers on WhatsApp?
Messages about their order are expected. For offers and new launches, only message people who have agreed to hear from you, keep it occasional, and stop when someone asks. People who feel chased block or report numbers.
Do loyalty stamp cards work for online stores?
Yes. On SitesPlaced's Growth plan, paid online orders can add stamps to the same digital card a customer fills at your counter, and the reward code for a full card also works at checkout on your store.
Should I give discounts to repeat customers?
A small private code for past buyers works better than discounting everything for everyone. Put a minimum order value on it so it doesn't eat your margin, and avoid running sales so often that buyers learn to wait for them.
Which SitesPlaced plan do I need for reviews and loyalty?
