Udyam registration for small online sellers — what it is, and what it doesn’t replace
Udyam registration is the Indian government’s free online registration for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), run by the Ministry of MSME. For most small online and Instagram sellers it is optional: you can sell without it. It can help with bank loans, proof that your business exists, some government schemes and late payments from business buyers. It is not a tax registration, and it does not replace GST, FSSAI or any licence your product needs.
Key takeaway: Udyam is free on the official portal (udyamregistration.gov.in), takes one sitting with your Aadhaar and PAN, and needs no documents uploaded. Do it when you need what it gives you: a loan, business proof for a bank or payment gateway, or protection when businesses pay you late. It sits alongside GST, FSSAI and the rest; it never replaces them. This is a plain-English map, not legal or tax advice. Rules and limits change, so confirm your situation with a chartered accountant (CA) or on the official portal.
TL;DR
- • What: a government record that your business is a micro, small or medium enterprise.
- • Cost: free on the official portal. Sites that charge you are not the government.
- • Needed to sell online? Generally no. It is voluntary.
- • Helps with: loans, business proof, schemes, and late payments from business buyers.
- • Doesn’t replace: GST, FSSAI, Shops and Establishments, product rules, income tax or a trademark.
What Udyam registration actually is
MSME stands for micro, small and medium enterprises. It is how the government groups smaller businesses for loans, schemes and protections. Udyam registration is how you get recorded as one. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar system in 2020.
It is a self-declaration: you fill in details about your business online, verified against your Aadhaar and PAN, and you get a certificate with a Udyam Registration Number that begins with “UDYAM-”. Your business is classed as micro, small or medium based on your investment in equipment and your yearly turnover. The limits for each class have been revised in recent years, so check the current figures on the portal. A new home-based seller will almost always be “micro”.
One thing it is not: a company registration. If you are a sole proprietor (you run the business in your own name), you stay a sole proprietor after Udyam. Our guide to how to start a business in India explains the structures if you are deciding between them.
Who can register
Broadly, any enterprise: sole proprietors (including home-based sellers), firms, LLPs, companies and others. You pick the activity that describes your business:
- • Manufacturing: you make things. Handmade jewellery, candles, clothing you stitch, pickles you cook.
- • Services: you do work for people. Tailoring on order, design, photography, repairs.
- • Trading: you buy ready-made products and resell them. Retail and wholesale traders were allowed onto Udyam in 2021, but government guidance at the time limited their benefits mainly to priority-sector lending from banks. If you only resell, ask a CA what registering gets you today.
Within your activity, you also pick an NIC code: a standard government code that describes what you do, and there are codes for retail sale over the internet. If you are unsure which fits, a CA can tell you in minutes. There is also a separate assisted route for very small informal businesses that don’t have a PAN, called the Udyam Assist Platform; check the official portal for how it works now.
What it can help with
None of these is automatic. Registration makes you eligible to ask; the bank, scheme or authority still decides.
- Proof that your business exists. A sole proprietor has no incorporation certificate. Banks opening a current account, payment gateways doing verification, and some marketplaces often accept a Udyam certificate as one proof of business, usually alongside another document. Each keeps its own list, so check before you apply.
- Loans. MSME lending counts as priority-sector lending for banks, and there are credit guarantee schemes, such as those run through the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE), meant to make smaller loans possible with less collateral. Banks usually ask for your Udyam number when you apply.
- Late payments from business buyers. Under the MSMED Act, a business that buys from a registered micro or small enterprise is expected to pay within the agreed time, and no later than 45 days. If they don’t, you can raise it with your state’s Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council, and the government’s MSME Samadhaan portal exists for filing these complaints. This matters if you do corporate gifting or supply shops; it doesn’t apply to shoppers who pay you upfront.
- Government buying and schemes. Registered MSMEs get some advantages when selling to government buyers, and many central and state schemes (training, subsidies, fairs and exhibitions) ask for a Udyam number.
- Lower official fees on some filings. Some government fees, such as for trademark applications, are lower for small enterprises. Check the current fee schedule before you rely on it.
What Udyam does NOT replace
| Registration | What it is for | Does Udyam replace it? |
|---|---|---|
| GST registration | The tax registration that lets you charge and claim GST. Compulsory in some situations, whatever your size. | No |
| FSSAI registration or licence | Needed to sell food, including home-made food. Applied for on FSSAI’s own portal. | No |
| Shops and Establishments registration | A state registration; whether you need it depends on your state and set-up. | No |
| Product-specific rules | Cosmetics, ayurvedic products, packaged goods labelling, some electronics and more have their own rules. | No |
| Income tax return | You still declare your business income every year. | No |
| Trademark | Protects your brand name or logo. A separate application. | No |
| Company or LLP | A separate legal entity. Udyam does not create one; a proprietor stays a proprietor. | No |

How to register on the official portal
The screens change from time to time, but the general shape is this:
- Go to the Udyam Registration portal of the Ministry of MSME. The address is udyamregistration.gov.in. Type it yourself rather than tapping an ad, and check that it ends in .gov.in.
- Choose the option for new entrepreneurs who are not yet registered (there is a separate option if you have an old Udyog Aadhaar).
- Enter the Aadhaar number of the proprietor (for other kinds of business, the person authorised to sign for it) and the one-time password (OTP) sent to the mobile number linked to that Aadhaar.
- Verify your PAN. Companies and LLPs use the organisation’s PAN, and their GSTIN where they have one.
- Fill in the business details: name, type of organisation, the address you work from, bank account, activity and NIC code, number of employees, and investment and turnover. For an existing business, some of this may be pulled from your income tax and GST records.
- Submit with a final OTP. Your certificate is issued online with your Udyam Registration Number.
You don’t upload documents and you don’t pay anything. Keep your certificate as a PDF where you can find it, because banks and gateways will ask for it.
Free on the official portal: watch out for look-alike sites
Search for “Udyam registration” and you will find private websites designed to look official, often near the top as ads. They charge a fee to file the same free form, and you hand them your Aadhaar and PAN details in the process. On the official portal, registration costs nothing and needs no paperwork.
- • The official address ends in .gov.in. Anything else is not the government.
- • The government charges nothing. A page asking for payment is not the official form.
- • If you want help, ask a CA you know. Paying someone for their time is fine; paying a website that pretends to be the government is not.
Should you register? A quick guide
| If you are… | Our suggestion |
|---|---|
| Testing an idea, a few orders from friends and followers | Not urgent. Sell first, register when you need it. |
| Opening a current account, or setting up a payment gateway that asks for business proof | Worth doing. It is often accepted as one proof; check their current list. |
| Planning to apply for a business loan | Do it before you apply. |
| Selling to other businesses (corporate gifting, wholesale, supplying shops) | Do it. Late-payment protections apply to registered micro and small suppliers. |
| Selling food | Sort out FSSAI first; that one is required. Udyam is optional on top. |
| Registered years ago under the old Udyog Aadhaar | Move to Udyam on the official portal; the old system was replaced. |

Where your online store fits
You don’t need Udyam or GST to publish a store on SitesPlaced. The free plan lets you publish a real store with unlimited products, cash on delivery, WhatsApp checkout and PDF invoices, at 0% commission. Online payments (UPI, cards, net banking) go through your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account, and those gateways run their own verification of your business. That is often the first moment a small seller needs a document that proves the business exists, and a Udyam certificate is commonly one of the options.

Frequently asked questions
Is Udyam registration mandatory to sell online in India?
Generally no. Udyam is a voluntary registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. You can sell online without it. It becomes useful when you want a loan, need proof that your business exists for a bank or payment gateway, sell to other businesses, or want to use government schemes. Confirm your own situation with a chartered accountant.
Is Udyam registration free?
Yes, on the official Udyam Registration portal run by the Ministry of MSME (udyamregistration.gov.in) there is no government fee and no documents to upload. Many look-alike private websites charge for it. If a site asks you to pay, it is not the government portal. A CA may charge for their time if you ask them to do it for you, which is a different thing.
Can a home-based seller get Udyam registration?
Generally yes. A sole proprietor running a business from home can register with their Aadhaar and PAN, giving the address they work from. There is no minimum size. Confirm on the official portal, as the form and rules can change.
Does Udyam registration replace GST registration?
No. They do different jobs. Udyam records you as an MSME for schemes, loans and protections. GST is a tax registration, compulsory in certain situations regardless of Udyam. Having one does not give you the other.
Can I register on Udyam if I resell products I buy from wholesalers?
Retail and wholesale traders were allowed onto Udyam in 2021, but the government guidance at the time limited the benefits for traders mainly to priority-sector lending from banks. If you only resell, ask a CA what the registration would actually get you today.
Does Udyam registration need to be renewed?
At the time of writing, there is no yearly renewal or renewal fee. You keep your details up to date on the portal, and your classification as micro, small or medium can be updated from your income tax and GST data. Check the portal for the current rules.
Do I need Udyam or GST to open a store on SitesPlaced?
No. You can publish a store on SitesPlaced free, with 0% commission. Online payments go through your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account, and those gateways run their own verification, which may ask for proof of business. A Udyam certificate is often one of the accepted documents, but check each gateway’s current list.
