Secret Santa gifts under ₹500: 20 ideas to stock and sell online this December
Secret Santa is the gift exchange where a group draws names and everyone buys one present for the person they drew, within a budget the group agrees first. In India it happens in offices, colleges and friend groups in the week before Christmas, and the budget is usually a round number with ₹500 as a ceiling you will hear often. That makes it a season a small seller can plan for: twenty ideas that fit under ₹500 are below, with how to make them gift-ready, how to take an office order for forty of them, and when to stop taking orders.
The product that wins Secret Santa is one that looks like it cost more than it did, suits a person the buyer barely knows, arrives wrapped with a card, and is in the buyer’s hands before the exchange. Price is not the only test. A ₹449 plant in a nice pot beats a ₹499 gadget that needs batteries. Make a “Secret Santa” category on your store, keep everything in it under ₹500, and let buyers sort by price.
TL;DR
- • Who buys: office staff, college students and friend groups, mostly 10 to 24 December.
- • What sells: plants, candles, mugs, cookies, small plum cakes, hot chocolate kits, socks, notebooks, 2027 calendars.
- • Margin: keep the landed cost under about half the price, or the courier eats the rest.
- • Gift-ready: a “Gift Ready” badge, paid gift wrap as an extra, and a note field for the card. All free.
- • Office orders: a “box of 20” product plus WhatsApp and a UPI advance.
- • Dates: courier orders close around 15–17 December; local until 23 December. Announce, then pause ordering.
Who buys Secret Santa gifts, and when
Three groups. Offices are the biggest: an HR or admin person organises the draw in early December and the exchange happens at the Christmas party, which with Christmas on Friday 25 December 2026 mostly falls between Monday 21 and Thursday 24 December, or the Friday before. Colleges run theirs before the winter break, so often a week or two earlier. Friend groups and families do it on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day itself.
The buyer is not buying for themselves and often does not know the person well. They want something safe. That is why plants, candles, mugs and food do well, and why anything that depends on size, taste in music or a phone model does not.
Searching starts when names are drawn, in the first half of December. Have your products live, photographed and priced by the end of November, so you are there when the search happens. New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027; offices rarely do a second exchange, but New Year desk gifts (a calendar, a planner, a plant) sell to the same people in the last week of December.
The 20 ideas, with a price band and why each works
The bands are target selling prices for a small seller, not market data. Pick five or six you can source or make well; a tight range with good photos beats twenty products with one photo each.

The maths under ₹500
The ceiling is fixed, so your cost is the only thing you control. Landed cost is what one gift costs you by the time it is in your hands, including the box, the ribbon, the card and the courier to the buyer. Keep it under about half of the selling price. Here is a worked example with made-up numbers.
- Desk plant in a ceramic pot, sold at ₹449: plant ₹60, pot ₹110, soil and wrap ₹20, box and card ₹40, courier ₹80. Landed cost ₹310. Left for you: ₹139 a plant. Tight, but it works in volume and the plant is the gift everyone photographs.
- Printed mug, sold at ₹399: blank mug ₹120, printing ₹40, box ₹30, courier ₹80. Landed cost ₹270. Left: ₹129.
- The same mug in an office pack of 20, delivered to one address at ₹6,999: twenty mugs cost ₹3,800, one carton ₹150, one courier ₹300. Landed ₹4,250. Left: ₹2,749 from one conversation, and one parcel to pack instead of twenty.
That last line is the whole strategy. Single gifts bring people to your store; office packs make the season pay. The product pricing calculator will do these sums for your real costs.
How to present a gift so it sells as one
- Photograph it wrapped and unwrapped. The first photo shows the gift; the second shows the box, ribbon and card it arrives in. The buyer is deciding whether they can hand it over as it is.
- Say “arrives gift-ready” in the first line of the description. On SitesPlaced, add the Gift Ready product badge from the badge presets on the product page; it shows next to the product on the storefront.
- Add a note field for the card. Open the product, find Personalisation & extras, turn on the text note and label it yourself: “Message for the card (we’ll handwrite it)”. The note is typed in the cart and arrives on your order. It does not need a photo upload to be on, though you can add an optional photo for frames and mugs.
- Charge for wrapping as a paid extra, or make it free. In the same card, add a paid extra such as “Gift wrapping +₹50” or “Handwritten card +₹30”. The buyer ticks it in the cart and the price is added per item. Set it to ₹0 if you would rather include it.
- Put everything in one category. Create a “Secret Santa under ₹500” category under Settings → Categories and tick it on each product. It gets its own page at yourbrand.sitesplaced.site/secret-santa-under-500 (the address follows the category name), which is the link you put in your Instagram bio and send to offices.
- Add a wishlist nudge. The wishlist is on by default on SitesPlaced stores, and Secret Santa buyers browse first and decide later. “Save it, then come back when names are drawn” is a reasonable caption.
Office orders over WhatsApp, done honestly
The person organising an office Secret Santa sometimes buys all the gifts in one go, so that every gift is the same price and nobody is embarrassed. That is the order you want. There is no minimum-order-quantity setting and no “request a quote” button on SitesPlaced, so do not promise either. The route that works:
- List the pack as a product. “Secret Santa box of 20: assorted mugs, plants and candles” at the pack price, with a photo of twenty wrapped gifts and a description that says what is in it and when it ships.
- Use the note for names. On that product, label the personalisation note “Names and any messages for the cards (one per line)”. The buyer pastes the list; it arrives on the order.
- Keep WhatsApp checkout on. It is free, and it lets the buyer send the order to you as a WhatsApp message instead of paying first. The chat is where you agree the delivery date, the office address and whether they want a logo sticker. On Growth, the WhatsApp chat bubble puts that chat one tap away on every page.
- Take an advance by UPI. Half up front before you buy stock. Or create a coupon code worth the advance under Settings → Discounts, so the buyer pays the balance through the store and the order is recorded with an invoice.
- Pack by name. If the office wants each gift labelled, write the name from the note on the card and on a sticker on the wrap. One carton to one address, and you are done.
For GST invoices, bulk price slabs and companies that need a vendor form, read corporate gifting orders for small businesses. For the chat itself, a WhatsApp order system for small business shows how to keep forty conversations straight.
Delivery timing: the dates that matter
A Secret Santa gift that arrives after the party is worthless to the buyer, so timing is part of the product. Work backwards:
- Exchange dates: most offices 21 to 24 December 2026; colleges earlier; families on 24 or 25 December.
- Courier to another city: ask your courier for December transit times (Shiprocket and Shipmozo both connect to a SitesPlaced store), add a day of slack and a day to pack. For most cities that puts your cut-off around 15 to 17 December.
- Local delivery in your own city: you can take orders until 23 December if you deliver yourself or through a local rider.
- Office packs: agree the delivery date in the chat and dispatch two working days before it.
Put the cut-off where every shopper sees it: the announcement bar at the top of every page (Settings → Branding). “Order by 16 December for delivery before Christmas. Local delivery until 23 December.” When you reach the date, tick Pause ordering under Settings → Checkout and write your own message: “Secret Santa orders are closed for courier delivery. Message us on WhatsApp for same-city delivery.” Shoppers can still browse and their carts are saved.
For delivery charges, a flat fee with free delivery above ₹999 works well here: a single ₹349 gift pays delivery, two or three gifts ship free, and the cart shows a bar saying how much more to add. How to set shipping charges explains the options. On cash on delivery for low-priced gifts, be cautious; how to reduce RTO and fake COD orders explains why and what to do instead.
Set it up free on SitesPlaced
Everything above runs on the free plan. A SitesPlaced store costs ₹0 with 0% commission: unlimited products and orders, UPI and cards through your own Razorpay, PhonePe or Cashfree account, cash on delivery with an optional extra COD charge, WhatsApp checkout, coupons with an expiry date, the free-delivery bar, product badges, a wishlist, per-product personalisation with paid extras, and invoices. Your own domain comes with Starter: ₹199 a month, or pay ₹199 once for 30 days with no autopay, or ₹1,990 once for a year. Starter removes the SitesPlaced badge, adds analytics, and makes your store’s pages answer about 4× faster than on the free plan: about 75 ms instead of about 330 ms, measured on live paid stores on 28 September 2026. “Answer” means how soon the page starts arriving, before the photos load. Growth (₹499 a month, or ₹4,990 once for a year) adds Buy X Get Y, the WhatsApp chat bubble and product reviews. The code FREE7 gives 7 days free on Starter or Growth when you set up autopay; cancel before the first charge and you pay nothing. The rest of the season is on the Christmas and New Year page for sellers.
Frequently asked questions
What are good Secret Santa gifts under ₹500 to sell online?
Small things that look like more than they cost and suit anyone: a desk plant, a scented candle, a printed mug, a cookie box, a 250 g plum cake, a hot chocolate kit, a coffee or tea sampler, soaps, fuzzy socks, a notebook and pen, a 2027 desk calendar, succulents, chocolate, magnets, a phone stand, a small photo frame, an engraved keychain, a jar pair or tree ornaments. Price each between ₹199 and ₹499 and make sure it arrives gift-ready.
When do offices do Secret Santa in India?
Mostly in the week before Christmas. With Christmas on Friday 25 December 2026, many offices exchange gifts between Monday 21 and Thursday 24 December, and some the week before. Colleges exchange earlier, before their winter break. Names are usually drawn in the first half of December, which is when people start searching for gifts, so your products should be listed by the end of November.
How do I take a bulk Secret Santa order from an office?
List the pack as a product, for example “Secret Santa box of 20, assorted” at the bulk price, with a personalisation note labelled “Names and any messages for the cards”. Keep WhatsApp checkout on so the buyer can send the order to you as a message and sort out delivery in the chat. Ask for an advance by UPI. There is no minimum-order setting or quote button on SitesPlaced, so the priced product plus WhatsApp is the honest way.
How do I add a gift message or name to a product?
On SitesPlaced, open the product and find Personalisation & extras. Turn on the text note and give it your own label such as “Message for the card” or “Name to engrave”. You can also add paid extras the buyer ticks in the cart, such as gift wrapping for ₹50, and an optional photo upload. It is free on every plan and the note arrives with the order.
What is the last date to ship Secret Santa gifts?
Work back from the exchange date, which for most offices is 21 to 24 December 2026. Allow your courier’s transit time plus one day of slack and a day to pack, so courier orders usually need to close around 15 to 17 December for most cities, and later for local delivery. Write the date in your store’s announcement bar and pause ordering when you reach it.
Should I offer cash on delivery on ₹300 gifts?
Be careful. A refused ₹349 COD parcel costs you the courier both ways and leaves you with an unsold gift after Christmas. Many sellers of low-priced gifts take prepaid only, or add an extra COD charge under Settings → Checkout so the buyer who insists on cash covers the risk. For office packs, take an advance and the balance before dispatch.
