Abandoned cart recovery for a small store — the fixes, cheapest first.
Roughly seven in ten shopping carts are abandoned, and on Indian mobile traffic it's often higher. Most of the loss isn't a buyer changing their mind — it's the shipping charge appearing at the last step, a long address form on a phone, or no cash-on-delivery option. Those are fixable before you send a single 'you left something' message. Here's the order to fix them in, and what the recovery tools do once the basics are right.
Where carts actually die
| Step | Why the buyer leaves | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cart page | Shipping charge appears for the first time | Show shipping on the product page and in the cart; free-shipping bar |
| Address form | Ten fields on a phone keyboard | Fewer fields; pin code auto-fills city/state; saved addresses |
| Payment options | No COD, or a gateway they don't trust | COD with a small charge; UPI via PhonePe/Razorpay; WhatsApp checkout |
| Gateway page | Slow load, OTP fails, app switch | Fast gateway; UPI intent; 1-click hosted checkout |
| Doubt | "Is this store real?" | Reviews, policies, a WhatsApp number on the page |
Fix 1 (free): no surprises at the last step
The single biggest lever. Put the delivery charge and timeline on the product page ("₹49 shipping · free above ₹999 · delivered in 3–6 days"), show it in the cart, and run a free-shipping progress bar so buyers see "add ₹200 more for free delivery". On SitesPlaced the bar appears automatically once a free-above threshold is set. A buyer who knows the total before checkout doesn't abandon at checkout.
Fix 2 (free): make the phone the easy path
- Ask only what the courier needs: name, phone, address, pin code, city, state, landmark. Email optional.
- Offer cash on delivery with a charge; half of first-time buyers want it.
- Offer WhatsApp checkout for the buyers who'd rather confirm in chat.
- Let returning shoppers save an address (customer accounts) so the second order is two taps.
Fix 3 (free): the WhatsApp nudge
For carts that already reached the address step, you often have a phone number. A single message an hour later — "Hi Priya, the mustard set is still in your cart; COD is available if that's easier 🙂 [link]" — recovers a meaningful share, because the buyer usually left for a practical reason you can solve in one line. One message, personal, no discount. Two messages is spam.
Where you have an email instead, the same message by email works about a third as well; it's still worth sending.
Fix 4 (paid): 1-click checkouts with saved addresses
The hosted 1-click checkouts solve the address form and the payment page in one move: the buyer's address is already saved from any other store on the network, payment is UPI/cards/COD in a single step, and COD orders are scored for RTO risk. Sell with Shiprocket (their Fastrr checkout, 2% per order to Shiprocket, no gateway of your own needed) and Razorpay Magic Checkout (on your own Razorpay account) both do this and both include abandoned-cart recovery flows. On SitesPlaced they are on the ₹499/month Ecommerce plan and run alongside the normal checkout, so buyers who prefer the classic flow keep it.
Rule of thumb: worth it once you're doing a few hundred checkouts a month. Below that, fixes 1–3 do most of the work for free.
Fix 5: when a discount is worth it
Rarely, and late. A 10% recovery coupon sent an hour after abandonment trains regulars to abandon on purpose. Use one only for first-time buyers, only after 24 hours, and only with an end date. A free-shipping code (SHIPFREE) reads better than a percentage and costs less on cheap orders.
Measuring it
Cart abandonment = carts started − orders placed, ÷ carts started. Store analytics (Ecommerce plan) shows the checkout funnel; on the free plan, compare the number of address-step WhatsApp numbers you collected with orders placed. Anything under 60% abandonment on mobile in India is good; under 50% is excellent. Fix 1 alone usually moves a store from 75% to 60%.
FAQs
What is a normal cart abandonment rate?
Around 70% globally and often higher on Indian mobile traffic. Under 60% is good for a small store; under 50% is excellent.
Why do customers abandon carts on small Indian stores?
A shipping charge that appears at the last step, a long address form on a phone, no cash-on-delivery option, a slow or distrusted payment page, and doubt about whether the store is real.
Does WhatsApp abandoned-cart messaging work?
Yes, when it's one personal message an hour or so after abandonment, ideally offering COD or answering the likely blocker. Automated sequences and discounts train buyers to abandon deliberately.
What is a 1-click checkout and does it reduce abandonment?
A hosted checkout where the buyer's address and payment details are already saved from other stores on the network and payment is one step. Sell with Shiprocket and Razorpay Magic Checkout both offer it with RTO scoring; they typically lift conversion noticeably for stores with meaningful volume.
Do I need a paid plan for abandoned-cart recovery?
Not for the fixes that matter most — showing shipping early, COD, WhatsApp checkout, saved addresses and the free-shipping bar are on the free SitesPlaced plan. The 1-click hosted checkouts with built-in recovery are on the ₹499/month Ecommerce plan.
Fix the last step first.
Shipping shown early, a free-shipping bar, COD, WhatsApp checkout and saved addresses on the free plan; Sell with Shiprocket and Razorpay Magic 1-click checkouts on the Ecommerce plan — free for 14 days on every new account.
