Instagram DMs vs your own store

Why DM ordering stops working after the first few dozen orders, and how a store with a link fixes it without replacing Instagram.

Instagram is where people find you. It is a bad place for them to buy from you. The two jobs need different tools, and the mistake most sellers make is forcing one app to do both.

What breaks when orders live in DMs

  • You are the checkout. Every order needs you awake: to quote the price, confirm stock, ask for the address, send the UPI ID, check the screenshot. Orders arrive at 11 pm and wait until morning. Some of those customers do not come back.
  • Nothing is written down in one place. Addresses in one chat, payment in another, the pincode in a voice note. On a busy day you ship to the wrong person.
  • Price questions scare buyers away. DM for price is a wall. Most people who would have paid ₹499 will not ask; they scroll on.
  • The algorithm decides who sees you. A post reaches a fraction of your followers. A link in your bio reaches everyone who taps it.

What a store with a link does instead

A store is a page where the price is visible, the customer picks the size, types their own address, and pays — by UPI, card, cash on delivery or straight on WhatsApp if they prefer. You get an order with everything in it. The customer gets a confirmation. Neither of you had to be awake. Read Instagram shop vs website for the full comparison.

On SitesPlaced that store is free, takes 0% commission, and still lets WhatsApp be part of it: a WhatsApp checkout that sends the filled-in order to your number, a chat bubble on every page, and a message the customer button on each order. See Take orders on WhatsApp.

What Instagram is still for

Everything it was for before — reels, stories, the photo that makes someone stop scrolling. The only change is the last line: instead of DM to order, it says link in bio. The link is the store. Comments still get a reply; the reply is the product link.

Marketplaces?

Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho bring buyers but keep the customer: you do not get the phone number, you pay a commission on each sale, and your product sits next to twenty cheaper ones. Many sellers do both — a marketplace for reach and their own store for repeat customers. If you can only do one at the start, your own store is the one you keep.

Write down

The three products you will put in the store first, and the line you will use in your bio. Then go to Open your online store when you are ready to build.
