Water less than you think
Most houseplants die from too much love, not too little. Wait until the top inch of soil is dry, then water until it drains — and never let the pot sit in a puddle.

Read the light, not the room
'Bright' means a metre from a sunny window; 'low' still wants daylight, just not direct sun. Turn the pot a quarter every week so it grows even, not lopsided.

Repot when roots peek out
When you see roots at the drainage holes, pot up just one size larger in peat-free mix. Spring and early monsoon are the kindest times to do it.
