# Discounts, coupons & offers

> Create coupon codes and Buy-X-Get-Y offers — scoped to categories, with expiry, usage limits and minimum-order rules.

Run promotions without touching your list prices. Open **Settings → Discounts** (or search *discount* in Settings). There are two tabs: **Coupon codes** — codes like `SAVE10` that customers type in at the cart — and **Offers** — automatic *Buy 2 Get 1* style deals that need no code. Both are recalculated on our servers at checkout, so a customer cannot tamper with them, and both can be limited to a single category.

## Coupon codes

Click **+ Add Coupon** and fill in:

- **Code** — what the customer enters. Spaces are removed and it is saved in uppercase; customers can type it in any case.
- **Active** — untick to pause a code without deleting it. The tab label shows how many are active.
- **Discount type** — **Percentage off** or **Fixed amount off**, and the **Percent (%)** or **Amount**.
- **Show this code on the store** — tick it to show the code to every shopper, with a copy button, in the *Offers for you* box on your product pages (the General Store and the newer templates have this box). It is off for every new code, so a code you give to one influencer or one unhappy customer stays private unless you choose otherwise. The code is still checked at checkout as usual. Free on every plan.
- Under **More rules (category, sale items, min order, cap, expiry)**: **Sale items** (see below), **Applies to** — **Whole cart** or **A category**, **Minimum order value (optional)**, **Max discount (optional)** to cap the rupees off a percentage coupon, and **Expires (optional)** — the code works through the end of that date.

Under each coupon a plain-English summary shows what it does — e.g. *"SAVE10" gives 10% off the cart, min order 999, until 2026-12-31* — so you can check it before saving. Click **Remove** to delete a coupon, then **Save** in the bar at the bottom.

### Coupons and sale prices

Products with an **Original price** set are "on sale". The **Sale items** dropdown decides what a coupon does to them: **Discount the sale price** (the coupon stacks on top of the markdown), **Calculate on the original price** (the shopper gets the lower of the sale price or the coupon price — never both), or **Not valid on sale items**. Example from the dropdown: ₹3,499 original, ₹2,999 sale, 20% coupon → the coupon price ₹2,799 wins; with a 10% coupon the ₹2,999 sale price wins and the item stays at ₹2,999.

## Buy-X-Get-Y offers

> **Growth plan:** Buy-X-Get-Y offers are a **sales booster** and run on the **Growth plan** (₹499/month). Coupon codes and sale prices stay free on every plan. Offers you set up on the free plan are saved and go live the moment you upgrade.

On the **Offers** tab, click **+ Add Offer** to reward bulk buys — e.g. *Buy 2, Get 1 Free*. Give it an **Offer name** (shown to customers), set **Buy quantity** and **Get free**, and tick **Active**. The cheapest eligible items in each qualifying group are free automatically — so with *Buy 2 Get 1* and three items in the cart, the cheapest of the three costs nothing; with six items, the two cheapest do.

- **Applies to** — **All products** or **A category**: which items count towards the *buy* side.
- **Free item comes from** — **Same products as above (cheapest free)**, **Any product in the cart**, or **A different category**. The last one lets you run *Buy 1 handbag, get 1 accessory free* — pick the **Free item category**.

A sentence under each offer restates it in words so you can sanity-check the maths before you save.

## How discounts combine

- Offers apply first, then the coupon. A customer can use **one coupon code per order**; units already made free by an offer are not counted again by a second offer.
- The combined discount can never exceed the merchandise subtotal. Delivery charges and any COD charge are added **after** discounts and are never discounted by a coupon.
- **Free delivery above** in Shipping is judged on the cart subtotal **before** discounts — so a ₹1,000 cart with a ₹200 coupon still qualifies for a ₹999 free-delivery threshold.
- Category scope uses the product's categories; a product in two categories qualifies if either matches.

## Good to know & troubleshooting

- **"This coupon needs a minimum order"** — the cart subtotal is below **Minimum order value**. **"Add [category] items to use this coupon"** — the coupon is category-scoped and nothing in the cart matches. **"Your sale price already beats this coupon"** — the coupon is set to *Calculate on the original price* and every item is already cheaper on sale.
- A coupon that doesn't exist, is unticked, or has expired shows as invalid at the cart — check **Active** and **Expires** first.
- There is no per-customer or total usage limit on a code. To end a promotion, untick **Active** or set **Expires**.
- To advertise a promotion, put it in the **Announcement bar** (Settings → Branding) and the first-visit **Welcome / promo popup** (Settings → Sales boosters), which can email the code to shoppers who sign up.
- Work out margins before you launch with the [discount calculator](https://sitesplaced.com/tools/discount-calculator).

**Q: Can a customer stack two coupon codes?**

No. One code per order. An automatic Buy-X-Get-Y offer can apply alongside a coupon, but the total discount is capped at the merchandise subtotal.

**Q: Do coupons reduce the delivery charge or COD charge?**

No. Coupons and offers discount products only. Delivery and COD charges are added after the discount, and the free-delivery threshold is checked on the pre-discount subtotal.

**Q: Why does my coupon apply to some items and not others?**

Check Applies to — a category-scoped coupon discounts only products in that category — and Sale items — with Not valid on sale items, products that have an Original price are skipped.

**Q: Can I make an offer free only the cheapest item, not a random one?**

That is the default. With Free item comes from set to Same products as above, the cheapest units in each qualifying group are the free ones.

**Q: Is there a limit on how many times a code can be used?**

Not currently. Control a promotion's lifetime with the Expires date and the Active checkbox.
